JONES, HMIEL, MITCHELL AND PERKINS LATEST ENTRIES FOR BUDWEISER OVAL NATIONALS!

(OCTOBER 2, 2010, PERRIS, CA) Orange, California’s Tony Jones, the 2000 Budweiser Oval Nationals Champion, heads the list of the latest entries for the 15th running of the celebrated race at Perris Auto Speedway on November 4th, 5th and 6th. Other recent entries are North Carolina’s Shane Hmiel, Matt Mitchell and teenager Kenny Perkins.

It has been ten years since Jones, the 40-year-old son of National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Bubby Jones, won the Oval Nationals on the famous Riverside County clay oval. One year later in 2001 “The Open Wheel Cowboy” finished second behind the only three-time winner in the race’s history, Bud Kaeding. In 2007, Jones raced through the pain of a late season broken collarbone to win the USAC/CRA championship. This year, campaigning mostly at The PAS, Jones is ranked sixth in the Amsoil USAC/CRA standings with season best second place finishes at the series last two races. While he is still seeking his first win of 2010, Jones has 36 lifetime wins in the combined 64-year years of CRA-SCRA-USAC/CRA action. That ranks him 13th overall on the all-time list.

Hmiel, from Pleasant Grove, North Carolina, will be driving Glenn Crossno’s famous red #38 iTi Performance Sprint Car in this year’s Oval Nationals. The effervescent racer brings four 2010 Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series wins and a ninth place position in the point standings to the Oval Nationals. Hmiel’s four wins all came on the pavement (two at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis and one each at Indiana’s Salem and Winchester Speedways) and he thus earned the USAC National Sprint Car Pavement championship for 2010. In addition to his prowess in the Sprint Cars, Hmiel, 30, won a USAC National Midget main event at the Hickory Motor Speedway in North Carolina in March and the prestigious Hoosier Hundred Silver Crown race on the famous mile dirt track on the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May. He finished eighth in the Sokola Shootout at The PAS in February.

Matt Mitchell is another of the young talented drivers to come out of Yorba Linda, California. At 23 year of age, he will be making his fifth start in the Oval Nationals. As a rookie in 2006, the affable driver started in the D main and transferred all the way to the B main event. He made his first Oval Nationals A Main in 2009, but bad luck saw his night end early with a 25th place finish. Mitchell finished seventh in the 2009 USAC/CRA Series standings and currently sits fifth in the 2010 edition. This year he has five top five finishes including a season best second place finish at The PAS on March 27th. Mitchell has been fast qualifier on three different occasions this year. He has one lifetime USAC/CRA win and that came at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare on Memorial Day weekend in 2009. In 2004 Mitchell was named USAC Western Midget Rookie of the Year.

Rounding out the current list of entries is 19-year-old Kenny Perkins of Victorville, California. The son of former driver Will “The Thrill” Perkins, the teenager began his Sprint Car career in 2007 and finished second in the points at the Victorville Auto Raceway that year. Perkins, who competes at Victorville, Ventura and in the Amsoil USAC/CRA Series, is currently 9th in points at Victorville and 13th in VRA. 2010 will mark Perkins second ever appearance in the Oval Nationals.

The Budweiser Oval Nationals is America’s premiere and toughest traditional Sprint Car race. All drivers have to race all three nights as they seek the prestigious title of Budweiser Oval Nationals champion and the $12,500.00 first place paycheck that goes with it. It is a full points paying event for both the Amsoil USAC/CRA and USAC National Sprint Cars. The final two days of the three-day racing fest will also include the California Lightning Sprint Cars.
