NEW EXPO TO HOLD VOGLER SCHOLARSHIP FUND EVENT
Anderson, IN - August 20, 2010 - Officials from the Great American Motorsport Exposition today announced that the U.B. Liken Co. will hold an benefit auction for the Rich Vogler Memorial Scholarship Fund on November 27, 2010. The benefit auction will take place during the inaugural Great American Motorsport Exposition to be held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Nov. 26-28, 2010. Tragically, Vogler was killed in a racing accident in the prime of his racing career. Vogler was fatally injured during a USAC Sprint Car event at Salem, IN on July 21, 1990. During Vogler's driving career he claimed 9 USAC championships. His 171 USAC total victories makes him the all-time USAC feature winner. Vogler was also a 5-time Indy 500 starter with a best finish of 8th in 1989. Richard's wife Emily, mother Eleanor, and sister Dale Ann Vogler wanted to honor his memory in a special way. Although he was a racing superstar, Rich always had problems with school. As a father, his sons' education was of paramount importance. So, a scholarship fund seemed the idea he would have most appreciated. The Rich Vogler Scholarship Fund was begun in 1990 with a generous $11,000 contribution from Valvoline, arranged by Jim Reynolds and USAC's Bill Marvel. Great American Motorsport Exposition founder, Gary Schlafer, explained the importance of having the benefit auction as part of the show. " I raced with Rich a few times during the late 1970's. He was an extraordinary competitor " explains Schlafer. " Eleanor Vogler has done a tremendous job with the foundation. Many worthy students have benefited from the generosity of the racing community each year. I'm happy that we can use the resources of the Great American Motorsport Exposition to help the foundation gain a little extra funding this fall " continued Schlafer. Schlafer indicated that this will be much more than a benefit auction. " Its been twenty years since the death of Rich Vogler. I feel maybe the younger fan just doesn't realize the impact Rich had on open wheel racing. We would like to make the entire day a celebration of Rich's entire career. We're going to try and get as many cars as possible that Rich drove during his career. We would also like to have trophies and other artifacts on display to help educate the newer generation fan on who Rich was " concluded Schlafer. The Rich Vogler Memorial Scholarship Foundation's vision is to encourage members of the racing community to further their education. Scholarships of $1,000. each are awarded to several candidates each year based on applications received. Funds may be used for any type of education from university to vocational training, or for special needs education. Scholarships are awarded to individuals throughout the United States. The Foundation's goal is to create a fund which is perpetual and self-supporting. The Great American Motorsport Exposition is a new Trade Show - Fan Fest. - Auction that is set to inaugurate this Thanksgiving weekend. The event will take place at the Blue Ribbon Pavilion on the grounds of the Indiana State Fairgrounds Nov. 26-28, 2010. Eleanor Vogler, as well as representatives of the Great American Motorsport Exposition, will be at Winchester Speedway Sunday afternoon August 22nd. They will be promoting the newly announced auction during the USAC Sprint Car Rich Vogler Classic Memorial race. If you would like to donate items for the auction or assist in any way please contact Eleanor Vogler (317) 439-1179. Cars that Rich Vogler drove during his career are being sought for display during the auction. If you would like to display your car or any other Vogler artifacts during the event please call David (765) 278-8231 or (317) 610-9479 |
