WAYNESFIELD, Ohio
Opening ceremonies saw the #X truck driven by Shawn Jacobs carrying the American flag during the playing of the National Anthem. Shawn ships out to join the United States Marine Corps on Sunday July 11th, and Waynesfield Raceway Park would like to wish Shawn nothing but the best as he heads off to serve our country! As A Main action rolled off for the Tuff Trucks, Shawn acted as the pace truck for the wave lap for the 15 lap affair before falling back into his 7th place starting spot. When the green flag flew, Matt Twining immediately made it clear that he was hungry for a win after an unusual drought. The driver of the Village Cafe #1w headed to the point and never looked back. Meanwhile, Matt's brother “Bee-Badd” Gabe Twining battled over the course of the next few laps with several trucks often going 2, 3, even 4 wide at times battling for the 2nd position. Gabe was able to clear the melee first in the Weasel Racing #25G and set sail after his brother Matt. Meanwhile, “The Juggernaut” Chris Hicks, aboard the Valvoline Instant Oil Change #71 “JuggaRocket” found himself fighting to make it through the great competition to try to catch the Twinings. In the end It was “Fat” Matt Twining picking up the feature win, with brother Gabe Twining in 2nd, “The Juggernaut” Chris Hicks came home 3rd, with Jerry Butler in the JR and Sons Service Center #1x fourth, and Shawn Jacobs in the #X truck coming home 5th. In victory lane, “Fat” Matt deferred his victory lane speech to Shawn Jacobs in a very special moment, as all of the Tuff Truck competitors pulled into victory lane to honor Shawn one final time before he leaves to serve our country.
Next up was the JR and Sons Service Center Compacts. After the A Main pulled out onto the track, it was revealed that Frazier's Garage in Ridgeway, Ohio had donated a $50 bill to whoever finished in the spot that came up on the inversion wheel. The wheel came up '8' so the eighth place finisher would receive the bonus. When the green flag flew, it was Justin Durflinger starting from the pole in the “Black and Blue Bullet” #17 jumping out to an early lead with #518 Jordan Iiams, #7 Ethan Pope, #25s Nick Frazier, and #31 Jeff Kimes in tow. Kimes began his charge through the field, battling with Durflinger for the lead at the halfway point of the 15 lap feature. In the end, it was Kimes picking up the victory, with Ethan Pope coming home second, Durflinger was third, Iiams fourth, and Frazier in fifth. Mike Sawmiller held on to eighth place to pick up the $50 bonus.
The Lee's Hydraulics Non Wing Sprint Cars were next to do battle on the 1/3 mile bullring. With 27 cars signed into the pit area, including racing legend Jack Hewitt, the fans were in store for a great night of racing. Mayhem ensued on the initial green flag for the A Main as #8c Lewie Christian, and #57 Thomas Meseraull made contact with each other, with Christian ending up getting upside down and both vehicles sustaining considerable damage. Both drivers walked away from the accident, but their vehicles were done for the evening. On the restart, it was Leipsic Ohio's Mike Brecht in the Midwest Machinery Movers #8b jumping out to the early lead before caution flew again. When action resumed, held the point with #0 Steve Irwin, #18k Todd Keen, and #54 Matt Westfall in tow. As the field began to string out, Westfall made his move, going inside Keen and Irwin down the backstretch to grab the 2nd spot. Mike Brecht held down the lead until lap 10, when “The Flyin' Buckeye” Matt Westfall made his move. As the leaders approached the halfway point, Westfall was making a mockery of lapped trafiic, taking his E&E Machine and Tool seemingly anywhere on the racetrack to make his way through traffic, at one point lapping up to the 8th position in the field. As the white flag flew, Westfall seemingly had the race well in hand until the yellow flag flew one more time for a spinning #40 of Travis Hery, marking his 2nd caution of the night, he took his car to the pit area. When action resumed it was a 1 lap dash for the win. Mike Brecht did all he could entering turns 1 and 2, diving to the bottom to try to slide job Westfall, but “The Flyin' Buckeye” continued his domination of Waynesfield Raceway Park in 2010, grabbing the checkered flag ahead of Brecht, #0 Steve Irwin, #41 Steve Ott, and #82 Mike Miller.
Wrapping up the evening's events were the Fowler and Hadding 1000cc Mini Sprints. Nick Daugherty would lead the field to the green flag for the 20 lap affair, driving the Rick Hench owned #1h. Meanwhile Nick's dad Rick Daugherty would make his return to the driver's seat, hopping in the family owned #7r. Rick proved that he still has what it takes making a tremendous move on the outside to jump from 6th to second on the initial start. Caution would fly early as the #23 of Devon Dobie would spin in turn 1 and gently tip over the Astro Lanes, Allan Nott sponsored entry. Dobie was able to rejoin the field, but with top wing damage, never becoming a factor in the A Main. As the field strung out Nick Daugherty charged away from the field, leaving his Dad Rick and the #47 of Garry Loney to battle it out for 2nd. Rick made the #7r Peterbuilt of Northwest Ohio machine as wide as he could, holding off #47 Garry Loney's relentless attempts to get by. That's how the top 3 would finish with #1h Nick Daugherty winning big over his dad #7r Rick Daugherty. #47 Garry Loney would come home third, with #10 Drew Dorsett, and #55 Rob Winks wrapping up the top 5. Kudos to the #328 of Becca Stiefel for coming home 6th in her visit to WRP in 2010 and taking on the 1000cc machines with just a 600cc powerplant under the hood.
Waynesfield Raceway Park will be closed on Saturday July 17th, but we will return to action in a big way on Saturday July 24th, when it will be the rescheduled “Sprints Gone Wild” racing program featuring the Lee's Hydraulics Non Wing Sprint Cars, in action for their last chance to see the track before the 2nd Annual Jack Hewitt Classic on August 7th. The Post Agri-Service UMP Modifieds will also see action as well as the JR and Sons Service Center Compacts.
