I can't tell you how many times in my professional career that I've taken the chance on rookies taking the stage for the first time. It's drama and excitement to the max. You never know what's going to happen when it's the initial voyage. That's part of the fun of something new and untested. I got into midget racing 8 years ago. Most of the owners that were in the midget business back in 2002 have moved on. Race teams have a very short life. Most are gone within a few years. I've raced with ARDC, USAC, POWRi, MARA, SMRS, NAMARS and a lot of open competition races along the way. I don't need to tell the intelligent fan that midget racing has been on the decline for the past few years. The Xtra midget series guys were headed in the right direction a few years ago but a lack of support from the midget owners and some big box ******** (which is still going on) put the hammer to those guys quickly.
I have a sizable investment in this business. I want to keep racing. You're a fool of you think that midget racing is going to survive based on the current rules.
Several months ago, I read on IOW of a promoter who was starting a new open wheel series and he had some out of the box ideas that seemed worth looking at. I made a casual suggestion that he may want to look into adding midgets to his series. He took me up on it. Outside of Tony Barhorst, who does a great job of keeping indoor midget racing alive, he's the first and only person to step forward and make an attempt to get grass roots midget racing back in the midwest. This promoter has worked night and day since that time, putting together a series that has some out of the box rules.
Saturday night, this series will make it's debut at Twins Cities Raceway and will continue at Montpelier on June 4. After that there are several other midget events that he's worked hard at developing that will happen throughout the summer and into the fall.
I'm calling for your support of this event, both midget owners and race fans. These initial promotions need to succeed for the betterment of midget racing in the midwest. This may be the one and only last chance for grass roots midget racing to succeed. There is room for more than one midget event in an evening in the midwest, just like on any weekend there are plenty of sprint car events to choose from. Midget racing just needs to grow to that level. It won't happen unless fans and owners get behind this effort.
If you have differences with the owners of Twin Cities (who are not promoting this event), I'm asking you to put those differences aside for May 8 and support ASCT/AMCT who is renting the track. The promoter has bent over backwards to try and make this first event a success.
Will this event be perfect? Probably not, but think of it as a beginning and a work in progress. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will grass roots midget racing return to full bloom over night. I've waited for this to happen too long for it not succeed. Please support this promotion. We may never get a chance to redevelop grass roots midget racing again.

I really like his ideas and I am hoping this series will flourish for the benefit of everyone. Unfortunately, timing and location are everything. I also want the Hut Hundred to survive - and Midgets at Haubstadt is just something I can't pass up. I'll be there, hoping that Vernon goes off without a hitch. I can only hope that both events succeed and lead to bigger and better things...
