Just wanted to report that Ernie Gorman, long-time midget / sprint car owner (drivers include Ryan Newman and Travis Welpott) passed away Saturday evening in Columbus, Ohio after a long and hard-fought battle with leukemia.
Ernie was genuine in his kindness, as well as passionate for the sport of open wheel racing. Those who were blessed to have known him, raced with him, and be counted among his friends will miss him dearly.

Thoughts and prayers are with family and friends. He assisted friends of mine in their racing adventures for many years.

He was born on July 17, 1938 to the late Ernest and Cora (Fitzgerald) Gorman Sr. in Terre Haute, Indiana. Also preceded in death by father and mother-in-law Herschell and Ruth Bouillez. Graduated from Glenn High School, Terre Haute, in 1957. Survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Patricia (Bouillez); daughter, Kerry Westenbarger; sons, Terry, David (Sue) Gorman, all of Ohio; four grandchildren, Christian Evans, Skyler Westenbarger, Danielle Gorman and Tyler Gorman; sisters, Helen (Ed) MacNeil of New Hampshire, Judy (Pat) Euriga of Indiana; brothers Lee (Ann) of Missouri, Wayne, Tim (Karen) Gorman of Indiana; special cousins, Ronnie and Charlotte Gorman of Indiana; sister-in-law, Marsha (David) Carlock of Indiana; former brother-in-law, Mike Pine of Florida; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He retired from Overnite Transportation in 2001, and continued working for the family business, Gorman's Body Shop. He was a member of the Terre Haute Jaycees and served for many years with Jr. Achievement of the Wabash Valley. Ernie was also a member of the Indiana Air National Guard. For many years, he had the joy of owning USAC midget and sprint cars with his family, (EGI Racing), they enjoyed numerous weekends traveling around the United States, racing with close friends. Ernie felt like all those who raced for EGI were like a part of his family. Ernie was loved by all who knew him, and was always laughing and joking. Special thanks to the entire staff of the eleventh floor hematology clinic at the OSU James Cancer Hospital. Your kindness and compassion will never be forgotten. PLEASE, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the James Cancer Hospital, 300 West 10th Avenue, Columbus, OH. 43210. Friends may visit Wednesday, April 14, from 6-9 p.m. at the DWAYNE R.
