The first ever ASCS Chevy ECOtec Midget event is in the books. 12 Chevy ECOtec Midgets along with 2 Focus Midgets and one Superfocus comprised the 15 car field. 2 heat races were followed by two more qualifiers, with combined points used to set the field for the 20 lap feature.
Heat one was won by Richard Kreisel from Warsaw, MO. (Richard also had good success at the Kemper Midget race with his ECOtec, making the show and running as high as 8th before settling for 12th). The second heat was won by Gary Taylor of Snohomish, WA in a brand new XXX ECOtec on its maiden voyage. Qualifier #1 went to Jacob Wilson from Crawfordsville, IN., in a car acquired for him just days earlier from Tom Land. Jacobs car is the one featured on the cover of Circle Track magazine. Qualifier #2 was won by Kevin Bayer from Bixby, OK. The feature event was the next-to-last race of literally hundreds of events comprising the Tulsa Shootout. If you have not been to the shootout, I don't think I could possibly find the words to describe the magnitude of the event. An estimated ONE THOUSAND racing vehicles of one kind or another were reported to be under that roof for those three days. I could report to you all about what a great race the ECOtec feature was, but some would suggest I might be a little biased so I'll limit my commentary as much as possible. 1. Kevin Bayer Bixby, OK 2. Gary Taylor Snohomish, WA 3. Bryan Clauson Noblesville, IN 4. Kevin Ramey Fort Worth, TX 5. Chett Gherke Broken Arrow, OK 6. Scott Sawyer Broken Arrow, OK 7. Justyne Cox Clarksburg, CA 8. Richard Kreisel Warsaw, MO 9. Tyler Thomas Collinsville, OK 10. Reece Goetz Snohomish, WA 11. Cody Ledger Omaha, NE 12. Jacob Wilson Crawfordsville, IN 13. Curtis Bailey Bartlesville, OK 14. Corey Mallo Cheyenne, WY 15. Lonnie Alton El Dorado Hills, CA Hats off to Eric and Tim Fenton, who fielded the winning car for Kevin Bayer. Crew chief Kenny Bayer refused to be deterred by the challenges of getting a car together on short notice. These guys are pros. Gary Taylor was coming for Kevin and would have had something for him in a few more laps. Thanks to BC for jumping into Rick Youngs car and giving it a good ride while Rick was off becoming a new Dad. Chett Gherke did a heck of a job coming from dead last to 5th after having some bad luck in the qualifiers. Remember the name TYLER THOMAS - trust me... Finally, a very special thanks to the Ford guys who came out and had some fun with us. Reece Goetz ran second in one of the heats and was very respectable all weekend. Floyd Bailey was also solid and from the size of the smile on his face all week I'm guessing he had fun. California pavement specialist and my dinner partner Lonnie Alton was admittedly in over his head at his first-ever dirt race against guys like BC, Sawyer, Taylor, etc., but he had a blast and the two of us got out on the town and soaked up some Oklahoma flavor. I'd have to say the event was a success, and the start of something good for Midget racing in Oklahoma. |
