pretty weak schedule again this year for such a famous track. i can remember when roger holdeman owned the track, he had between 4-8 usac races a year. he always had a packed grandstand for every usac event. (even with 15-18 cars) no arca, no hooter's pro cup. can't see how a track like this can survive running 7 races a year. if you lose 1 or 2 events to rain, your season is toast. i just don't get it.

The track is now promoted by the guys who run the CRA Super Series for owner Charlie Shaw. They have four different divisions that they promote so most every show has at least one or two of their divisions running. I am afraid that with the economy being what it is, USAC, ARCA and USARacing is probably priced out of the market. In an earlier post about the USAC schedule, I mentioned that I was surprised that USAC only had one date at Winchester.

Pavement sprint car racing (non wing) isn't a very strong card any longer. Car counts are low and fans aren't exactly breaking down the gates to get in. I am afraid that 2010 could be the last year for a while to see regular non wing pavement sprint cars. I hope that I am wrong on this.

Along this line, I am also disappointed that Winchester hasn't been on a supermodified schedule. I would like to see the ISMA or MSA put on a show there. Not going to happen in 2010.

Winchester has not been right since Linda had to sell the racing jewel. She cared about the place, the promoters now know nothing or care nothing about the tracks history.

dyno don said it best. i also wonder if maybe usac is having reservations about dealing with the current winchester management? once again, there is no usac midget race on the schedule. roger used to have upwards of (3) sprint-midget doubleheaders a year. (vogler classic in april, a doubleheader in june, and the sammy sessions memorial around halloween) lots of cars, fans. and he did it when the economy was less than spectacular in the late 80's and early 90's. I also find it interesting that winchester was a nascar weekly track from 1991 to 1998, and when Mr. Casket fired Linda, Nascar pulled the plug on winchester. Charlie went to florida the next winter to beg nascar to come back, and they told him no thanks. They have made some incredibly poor decisions at winchester the last 10 years. Another big mistake was closing the track for the entire 90th anniversary season in 2004.

Dyno Don, your words are so true. Linda put her heart and soul into running Winchester, she was very dedicated to both Winchester and Oswego Speedways during her time at both tracks.

I cant believe I am going to say this but Dyno is right on. I used to be able and call and talk to Roger and he would give me a full report on the cars he expected and who was in what ride and car counts. He gave me alot of time that he did not have to do just because. He knew I would bring 10 people plus to each race and most importantly he was just a good guy and loved his track and talking about racing.

I have great memories of Winchester and growing up there as a kid. I would love to build some of those same memories with my son but the current promoters and specifically RJ Scott could care less about the average fan. This has been well documented on this board and others and I think everyone is realizing it and now, hence the weak schedule!

I hope someone gets to promote the track and return it back to its original fan friendly status and appreciate its history. Maybe we could talk Dave Rudisell into running Winchester on Sundays and Thursdays HAHA.

I do commend USAC for maintaing a strong pavement schedule and trying to keep pavement racing going. I just hope they can figure out how to make it more affordable to have pavement cars also in this bad economy. I love dirt racing the best but damn, pavement cars at Winchester is something every sprintcar fan should see in there life with some promoters that understand running it.

I wish they would bring back the Snowball open competition races in early November. Those were some of the best races ever run there, with rear engine supermodifieds, front engine supers, and Lenny Waldo in the upright Miller Special #65 doing battle with them.
