He has gottten more accolades as a racer than anybody I know of. But what I like about Mel is that he is one of the finest examples of a human being on this planet, period.

This is indeed a sad, sad day.
Words con not express the sadness I feel at seeing that my last original icon and hero step out of a racecar for the final time. Mel, this sport owes you more than you have ever received. I am glad that I am not able to make this race this weekend. I never saw Waltrips's last race, Yarborough's last race, Parson's last race, Gary B's last race and those were all (and still are) my icons and hero's. Mel you are still a huge inspiration and hero to me. From the bottom of my heart, you have made the years of my being a fan of midget racing memorable. May you enjoy your retirement and my God continue to bless you. ![]() |

Mel confirmed in a phone conversation Wednesday night that he is indeed retiring following this weekend's Rumble in Fort Wayne. Please see story on separate thread.
Please help get the word out to Mel's many friends and fellow competitors. Thanks. --Ron Ware, Rumble Series
