I posted a few of these retro result threads during the previous off-season and they seemed to have an audience. Thought I would see if I could find interest and generate some discussion again this year. It would seem that this new "Old Timers Forum" is the proper home for this sort of stuff.
Time Trials -23 Cars - Track Record 18.59 by Parnelli Jones on 9/4/60 -3 Roger McCluskey.........18.87 -1 Parnelli Jones..............18.58 New Track Record 10 Johnny Rutherford.......19.61 -7 Mickey Shaw..............20.03 Offy 37 Claire Lawicki..............20.91 GMC 93 Harold Smith...............19.30 11 Chuck Engle................19.44 53 Dick Northam...............20.26 83 Tommy Copp...............20.27 Dodge 22 Bobby Baughn.............19.65 16 Bob Smith...................20.73 96 Dave Weir...................20.45 -5 Al Miller......................19.39 Offy -2 Bud Tinglestad.............19.21 77 Dave Norris.................19.69 28 Don Branson................19.20 -9 A.J. Fast Car Dash - 3 Laps - Finish 28 Don Branson....................3 -3 Roger McCluskey...............1 -9 A.J. Foyt prevailed in this one after losing out to Cecil98's guy, Parnelli, in '61. +There was a bounty of $1000 to any driver bringing the "one lap world record" to Salem Speedway, then held by Don Branson who had turned the Dayton (OH) Speedway at a clip of 106.301 in 18.28 seconds. No takers on this day. +After watching practice at the Salem Speedway on 9/29, we ventured out to the Salem Fairgrounds to catch the 50 lap UMRA TQ Championship Race. Even though I didn't jot down and don't remember for sure who won (I think it might have been Sonny Ates) I recall that there was excellent racing on the little dirt track. Well worth the steep $1.25 admission. Other than Ates, who would later become one of my all-time favorites, competitors included Jim Gettlefinger (I believe he later ran Salem Speedway), Rick Myer, Mel and Roland Harpring (Greensburg brothers), Dick Dwenger (also from Greensburg, I think), Russ Hankins, Bob Parsons, and others. I believe this was a year or two before Bob Christian arrived to dominate UMRA for awhile before jumping into sprint cars. Could be wrong about that. My disclaimer from last year still applies. That is I make no guarantees with respect to name spellings, exact results, etc. keeping in mind that back then I was in the habit of consuming rather large quantities of adult beverages. You might say that I was the "Aero of the 60's". Still, I did better then than I do now. Also, bear with me if I repeat some comments already posted in previous typings. I'm old, forgetful, and am not inclined to search historical threads to avoid repetition. ![]() ![]()

I agree with Mr. Mugavin, keep them coming. And as far as the adult beverages are concerned, please tell me that you didn't partake in any of that Ding-a-ling beer that Aero drinks!

Yeh, this is about what I figured would happen this year with the retro results threads. Very little interest. In fact, it doesn't look like many IOWers even come here to the "Old Timers Forum".
I'll throw up one more since I have already pulled out an old program from 4/3/66. Fun while it lasted last year. Deader than Tiger's commercial appeal this year. ![]() ![]() ![]() Thought about switching from posting retro results to doing future results but it occurs to me that might hurt ticket sales if folks already know who wins. ![]() |

This was actually the fist day I came over here to post something, in fact I have been laying low for whatever reason.
I may have asked this before. Is Dave Weir any relation to Scotty? John, congrats on Shane's promising upcoming season. Hope you guys can make it out to the 'burg a few times next year. Marv, as for future racing results, if you can do this for Turfway, Churchhill and Keenland I will definately be interested. ![]()

AJ and that entire bunch from the 60's and 70's have always been in a special league by themselves. AJ has always been my favorite. Got a chance to be in his pit during tire testing at Indy a few years (many) ago. I really enjoy your retro stories. I look on this site quite often, but don't always log in. Keep up the good work!
