On Saturday night,Oct.17th,the Arizona Sprint Car Association(360 Non-Wing)concluded its season at Canyon Speedway Park with the crowning of a new points champion,15yr.old Zach Sawyers. He was A.S.C.A. Rookie of the Year in 2008.Wheeling the Sawyers family Ellis/Mountain Valley Performance sprinter,Zach has been a front runner this entire year, with heat race and trophy dash wins, and top 5 main event finishes.Congratulations to Zach, his dad Craig, grandpa Jerry and the entire Piggly's team for a job well done! And also,a big "Thank You" to Doug Gabbard, promoter of Canyon, for helping rescue Sprint Car racing in the Phoenix area.
For those that don't know about Zach Sawyers I'm sure some of you will soon know that he's fast! I'm sure he'll be running out at the Western World with many of top drivers in the country. What wasn't stated above is that Zach has only been in a sprint car for a year and a half. He started 2008 racing a modified midget (micro) and then moved up in ranks around June of last year. Mom and Dad made sure he was mentored by some of Arizona's bests (Dave Ellis, Jeremy Sherman, and Bobby Marcum to name a few). He has grown leaps and bounds over the last year and a half and I look forward to seeing his future in racing. I know that the Arizona Sprint Car Association isn't currently an association to jump up and down about. It's the under dog in Arizona when compared to the ASCS Canyon Region but don't let that fool you. He beat some of Arizona's best drivers to win this championship. He's still very young and has allot to learn but watch out for him because again he's fast. Zach has also been busy racing a speed truck and a legend this season. I might ad that he has been doing very well there too.
Zach you’re a great kid and I’m happy you won that battle!
