Most run the std Dyna S, with either dyna(green) or excel(yellow) coils. You can run the stock coils, but I think most are using what I mentioned. I have been doing some R&D for a new ignition, from a company in Iowa, and it's gonna be probably the best available, and is priced right. Right now, they are working on an all out, race version, that is programmable, and comes std with 4, built in advance curves, one is available now, that is a complete kit, coils, wires, and ignition module, very easy setup, and timing set, has a built in led, so you know where it is firing. The kit sells for $349.00. Bob

Use the Dyna S ignition and Coils. It is the easiest one to use.

My car has the Dyna S and the Accel coils, and yes they are great. It was super easy to figure out. All it was, the two wires to the coils were backwards. I got the car fired up yesterday, and should be ready to race this Sat. at Greensburg.

That happens, I even paint a little on the wire, and the coil, just a black dot, on the coil, and the extension wire, so if in a hurry, it makes it easy, especially if you have a volunteer helping. Then I use a black marker, and a white marker, and number the plug wires, to make it even simpler. See ya Sat. if Charlie gets the jet dryers going! Bob

If you can find an ARD mag, this is the best. We ran them for years on the hondas and the kawi's. I still run them on my 2 street bikes and you never have to worry about a dead battery because you don't need one. They come up on flee bay now and then.

Magneto's have almost gone the way of the Tri-Motor Ford airplanes, the ignition I mentioned at the beginning of this thread, will run on a 9v dry cell. Most of the guys that have ARD drives, use a VW electronic distributor, with an electronic impulse inside, and one of the more modern ignition coils. The mags were good in their day, but better things have come along. Honda made a factory magneto, that was used on their factory race bikes, even for the time period, it was pretty hi-tech, replaced the big old alternator flywheel, and the starter, that's why they push started them, those would stand the RPM, but talk about scarce, I've only seen about 3, wish I'd have kept one, I could get them in production again. Google cyclex, and look at Ken's website, he's brought back a lot of the stuff that is made of "unobtainum". Bob

My theory on this is that single fire develops a hotter, fatter spark due to not having to share the coils output to two plugs, and that is what gives the slight power increase.
I can tell you for sure that my N9 cammed S1 was no smoother idling or running with a high output single fire system...but it was capable of igniting a terribly rich mixture! |
