SHELBYVILLE, IN – Inclement weather washed out the Vincennes University Midwest TQ Racing League’s “Salute to Wilbur Shaw” Saturday night at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. Rain hit the track just as the Midwest three quarter midgets were about to take the green flag in the Jackson Oil & Solvents Duel for Fuel.

Mark and Jen Frechette, MTQRL organizers, wish to thank the owners, drivers and crews, along with the approximately 275 fans who braved the wet conditions. A special thanks to Gary Lee who organized this special event with the help of the Shelby County Fair Board, Shelbyville City Council president Kim Owens, Shelbyville mayor Scott Furgeson, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Speedway loaned the Vincennes University MTQRL one of their prized possessions, the Boyle Maserati, for display. Former Shelbyville resident Wilbur Shaw drove the legendary car to two consecutive victories in the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway historian Donald Davidson and Wilbur Shaw, Jr. were also on hand for the evening for interviews and autographs.

We also wish to thank the Shelbyville News for their great article on the racing event and radio station WSVX for helping to promote the “Salute to Wilbur Shaw.”

Any fans or competitors holding tickets from last night’s event may redeem them for entrance to future MTQRL events at Shelbyville.

After discussion with the Shelby County Fair Board we are pleased to announce an extra race date. The Vincennes University Midwest TQ’s will now be competing at the Shelby County Fair on Wednesday night July 1st. Other dates at the Shelbyville oval include August 22nd and September 12th.

Thank you to all who came together for the Vincennes University MTQRL Shelbyville race. To be able stand within a few feet of something as amazing as the Boyle Maserati is just indescribable. It was a great honor to hear the stories of Mr. Shaw and Mr. Davidson. I could listen for hours.

Thanks to all the people and fans that came up to me with excitement and gratitude for the new series. Thanks to the drivers and teams who work hard to entertain the fans. There were both faithful fans and several new fans. Thanks to the drivers who signed autographs. You made a few future racer's day.

If you haven't yet, pick up a copy of the Shelbyville newspaper. There are several great articles about TQ racing, driver Joe Miller, and Wilbur Shaw. Thanks Jeff Brown for coming to our race.

Thanks to WSVX for getting the word out and the interviews. (P.S. When Gary comes around, lock up the old turntable and hide the mic.)

See you all at the next race.
