SCORA Double Header Winners

Ray Kenens in the K9 car won the 16 car A main at Kamp Motor Speedway Saturday, May 30th. Bob Kamp said it best after the checkers fell on the A main, "You can't ask for any more than that", referring to the three wide racing for not only the lead, but through the pack.
J.C. Bland won the 12 car A main at Kankakee Co. Speedway on Friday, May 29th. Despite a light car count, the racing action was wheel to wheel with several passes for the lead. Heat races, Qualifier races and the A-main had lots of great racing action. Here is a quote from an email I received from Kankakee Co. Speedway, "I really enjoyed your guys' first visit, as I thought they provided an excellent show. Really glad to have you all and look forward to August 14th. What a show that will be!!! If you thought last night was good, wait until that night." The SCORA steel block sprint car series will be at Soggy Bottom Raceway in Morgantown, KY next Saturday, June 6th where drivers will be guaranteed $200 tow money. The following week on Saturday, June 13th, the SCORA sprints will join forces with the Midwest Sprint Car Series and the Indiana Late Model Series for a triple header show at the Terre Haute Action Track. Drivers with steel block motors will be allowed to pull double duty and race in the MSCS program and the SCORA program. These guys are putting on great racing action. The series has had four races and four different race winners featuring more than twenty different drivers. These guys work their regular jobs during the week, build their own cars, work on their own cars, help the guy in the pit next to them and race because they love racing. Seeing some of these guys pull in with open trailers, the bed of their pickup piled up with tools and spare tires brings back a lot of good memories of "the old days". I want to thank all of the racers who are supporting this new series and those who have called and asked for information about racing with us. Joe Chambers SCORA Race Director

Let me squash that rumor for you. As the race director for the series, I can tell you SCORA has not opened their races to aluminum block motors.

The series has not opened up to aluminum blocks. There was however intense discussion over the possibility of doing so because of the low car counts and growing concerns of the promoters. I for one hope that it stays a steel block’s only series but if Sam doesn’t see an increase in the number of committed followers who could blame him and before any-one flips out I want to say it again, “THERE HAS BEEN NO RULE CHANGE AT THIS TIME”. However I would like put my two cents in. I would rather run a combine engine rule series with an overall weight rule and still have an affordable series to compete in instead of just letting the series die out. I sold all my modified stuff so that I could start piecing equipment together to run this series next year so I want to make it understood that I want it to stay “as-is” but I would understand if Sam thought the series needed a rule change to keep it going. The car count has increased this weekend and we had a great show at Kankakee with 12 cars signing in and we had 16 at Kamp making it our highest car count thus far and man what a show it was. Both nights came down to the wire. Our guys have put on outstanding races and I have to give a throw out to J.C Bland and Ray Kenens on their round 3 and 4 wins. There have been 4 different winners in as many races for the S.C.O.R.A’s young 2009 season and I for one am looking forward to our next stop at Morgantown Kentucky’s, Soggy Bottom Raceway this Saturday night June 6. Sam has put up $200.00 guaranteed tow money for any and all steel block sprint car racers that want to head south with us this weekend to help offset the fuel cost that has plagued us all at the pump. I hope that all of you can make the trip.

maybe what started the rumor was when john gurley called all the drivers to tell them that alum blocks were allowed, then after some heated discussion they put it on hold for the weekend. i would think if you were the "race director" you would know about that.

No one was ever was told that SCORA was changing to aluminum motors. I was with John Gurley when phone calls were made. The calls were made to get input from racers on what direction the Series should go to survive. The final decision was made to stay on track and ask for better support from the steel block racers. Well the weekend past let us know we are going in the right direction. The battle is not completly settled, but the car count was good and the racing was excellent. We are looking forward to the upcoming races. Soggy Bottom Speedway at Morgantown, Kentucky is next weekend and I will guarantee $200. minimum tow money. Then in two weeks we will be at Terre Haute Action Track. Thanks for the interest, Sam Stockon Sr. SCORA president

John Gurley is the announcer for SCORA and he is doing a fine job at that. He brings color and excitement to the race track. We travel to primarily stock car tracks who don't know many of the drivers and his work at the PA and in the stands is an asset to the series. I'm not sure which discussion you are referring to, but the only thing heated at the meeting Sam and I had on the subject was the mexican food. And yes, I am the race director. Hope to see you at a SCORA race. These guys are putting on some fantastic racing in these steel block sprint cars. Joe Chambers SCORA Race Director |
