Here's some information that I just found on www.jayski.com while searching my normal sites. I wouldn't call it the "ideal" situation, but it would still be nice to see J.J. behind the wheel...

Yeley to sub for Mayfield UPDATE NO?: J.J. Yeley will drive the #41 Toyota for Mayfield Motorsports starting this weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Yeley replaces Jeremy Mayfield, who was suspended indefinitely from NASCAR on Saturday after violating the sanctioning body's substance abuse policy [see story below]. "We believe in J.J.'s talent," said crew chief Tony Furr. "He's available for every race. So we won't be changing drivers. J.J. has something to prove just like we all do. We want someone that's hungry just like us. Everybody on this team has at one time or another worked for a larger organization. We're all racers who are all hungry, who all want to make the most of second chances and J.J. sort of fits that mold." The team is expected to name an owner of record shortly.(FoxSports - link gone)

UPDATE: Who will replace the suspended Jeremy Mayfield? That's the question on everybody's mind after Tony Furr, crew chief of the #41 Jeremy Mayfield Motorsports entry, rescinded earlier comments to FOXSports.com that J.J. Yeley was tabbed for the position. Speaking on behalf of the team, Shana Mayfield said no decision has been made but Yeley is on the short list. Mayfield was suspended indefinitely from NASCAR on Saturday after violating the sanctioning body's substance abuse policy. The team is expected to name an owner of record shortly, as Mayfield is not allowed to be owner of record during his suspension.(FoxSports)(5-11-2009) Comment here

Well, it looks like Mike Wallace and Todd "The Onion" Bodine are also on the short list. I'd love to see J.J. get a shot at it, especially ahead of those two! Oh yeah, this information was also aquired from www.jayski.com...

I truly feel for Jeremy. My personal thoughts are that he's speaking the truth, and that he's caught up in a Kobayashi Maru. It's now up to him to best the Klingons which is somehow appropriate considering this is NASCAR, huh?. (Good movie by the way).

Regarding the few articles that I've read commenting about NASCAR not being specific enough about the banned counter drugs and the acceptable (if any) max levels, they are opening themselves up to TONS of legal issues. I hope that this at least establishes a better game plan for testing and evaluating the drivers.

That being said, I'm excited that JJ is back in the seat. He's too good of a guy and way too talented of a driver to be sitting around on weekends watching others race.

With very mixed feelings, I hope that Jeremy's "indefinate suspension" takes a few weeks to get settled. It should give JJ enough time to re-expose his talents for those owners currently evaluating silly season changes.

This guy says give it a great ride this weekend JJ. I'm all behind you and Jeremy.

Probably most everybody has the same knee-jerk reaction to a big time sports player, football, baseball, etc, who gets busted for drugs. Oh that guy is an idiot, all that money, has life by the tail and throws it away by doing something stupid like drugs.
But in this case I have a hard time believing that at age 35 or 40 he just decided one day, hey I'm gonna start doing drugs. I don't know, I just have a hard time believing that, something is wierd. NASCAR really needs to clearly state what the drug was that Mayfield was suspended for.
I don't know the legalities of releasing that type of info but I would be shocked if it were some hardcore stuff. For now I tend to believe what he says about over the counter stuff mixed with prescription stuff. I'm just not a fan of NASCARS' "secret cloak of darkness" policy.
David.

Anyway....KICK BUTT J.J. !!!

I totally agree with you on that, David. I also find it hard to believe, but not just because of his age, etc. First, he's been out of the sport for a few years, so why come back and throw it all away. Second, why invest all of the money into creating your own team, Mayfield Motorsports, or whatever it's called. I just don't see someone making all of this effort earlier this year and four or five months later he's tossing it in the trash. Granted, I could be thinking too much, but until there's proof, I'm leaning towards Jeremy's side.

Either way, it's awesome to hear J.J.'s name in NASCAR again!
