DO NOT :thumbsdown:do this. I have had people wanting to buy our labradors that did the same thing. They will send a check larger than needed. If you cash this and then send the "extra" money back to them you are caught. You will owe the bank for the lost money on a bad cert./cashiers check. I always told them in a email or a call that it has to be a USPS check (then cash it at your post office) for the exact amount and that I would handle shipping, they will probably disappear.

Most people will give you all their info. if they are serious. Long before demanding yours.

This is just my dealings with this stuff.

I have found a few sites with some warnings:

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/cons...dit/cre40.shtm

http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams

I had a friend that was selling some furniture and was approached in a similar manner. It was a scam. I am not saying that this one is, but I would be very careful. Especially when you consider that the bank will hold you responsible for the cash, should the check be counterfeit.

It's the oldest scam in the book Lloyd. Email them and ask for their phone number, tell them you wish to discuss the sale....you will never hear from them again. Use this trick whenever you feel "uneasy" about any potential buyer. It really weeds them out. :thumb

Yep it's a scam. I always let them send the check because they have to pay for it to be shipped overnight. Then when they call to have you send the over payment cash back I tell them they can get it when they pick up the pit cart.

I've received that identical email when trying to sell my truck on Craigslist. It is a scam.

Yep, it's a scam, I had the pleasure of putting one in a room with one other person, a few years ago, on a trailer I had posted for sale. Kinda nice to get a call from the FBI, thanking me for my help in putting this person in RFD 2, they actually sent me a ck, good one too, drawn on some poor souls account in Ca, who was the victim of identity theft, didn't have a clue someone was stealing money from their account. Makes ya sleep good, when you help put one away! Bob

I had this just last week. Was selling a tanning bed on craigslist. I sent them an e-mail and told them if they show up with a pickup truck and cash its theres. Otherwise take a hike. Never heard from them again.
