:Oid I hear right Sunday, did I hear them say they had "implemented" a new rule, to stop the "start and stop" guys? The way I think I heard it was, in order to provide better racing, for the fans, as of last Sunday, if you start a race, and run a few laps, and pull in, there had better be "something wrong" with your car. There are at least 15 teams/cars, that depend on that system, to make ends closer together, and if they have to run, till they blow the only engine they "borrowed", or tear off a fender, they probably won't exist, which to me says, "you guys don't deserve to be here, so if you can't run the distance, don't show up"! I'm afraid that rule, woulda made for short car counts last year, let alone now, with tires at $1500.00 a round, they probably blow a big hole in what budget they got, just getting qualified. Then again, I don't make the rules, or try to help keep the car count up, I just stuff the money in my blue jeans, and smile!:moon: Bob

I read the other day that if a driver qualifies for every race, with out finishing, they will make $3,500,000 for the season.

Now I ask, who want's to partner up with me???? :wink

I don't know what the numbers were, but it seems like I heard 70k to start Hotlanta, it probably varies quite a lot. I don't see how those poor guys in the truck series do it, some venues don't pay as well as Sprints do, I've heard numbers of less than2k. If the cup teams average 50k, to start, and I wouldn't count on that, maybe 2.5, but that wouldn't pay the tire bill for some teams, but that is something to ponder, I got a lot of friends in that camp, and most of them, from our early days of Karting, some even 2nd generation, Scott Speed for one, all the Green brothers, Mikey, and Darrell Waltrip, and of course, Tony, I've known him since he was about 6, we ran the same dirt track for years, and some from my days in TQ's. Used to do a little machine work for Dave Marcus, when he was doing R&D for Dale, developing the restrictor stuff, had a young man that helped me in the shop, that went on to be a crew chief, for several teams, and still subs once in a while. Don't quote me on this, strictly going off memory, but wasn't it Morgan Shephard who used to take advantage of this a few years back? He would show up each week, not practice, turn 1 lap of qualifying just to get in the show, and pull in after 1 or 2 laps of the start.
I remember the announcers somewhat laughing about it because they would show his pit stall before the start of the race. No fuel jugs, no tires stacked up, no toolbox, no NOTHING in his pit. There was 2-3 guys standing behind the wall and after the race started he would just pull straight back to the garage and load up.
The announcers claimed he could attend 4 race weekends on 1 set of tires! :rolling
David.

Well it was Kirk Shelmerdine was the one that finialy pushed in the top 35 lock in rule when he made like 2 mil starting and stopping and every 3 attempts to make a race that you did not qualify for you get a provisional

If NASCAR does this, and forces small teams to run until they crash/break after they've earned their way into the field by qualifying and paying an entry fee, there will likely be a few lawsuits filed as NASCAR tries to "prove" why the cars "start and park". If the entry blank does not contain some wording to reference this type of behavior and any ruling against it, it's likely that NASCAR will have a hard time enforcing it....

And if they apply the "...detrimental to the sport..." rule, well, they'll just guarantee the promoters short fields of cars.

Here's a Car and Driver story that was published a few month back.....
