Paul, if you have the opportunity, I would love to have one of the bricks from the old motel. I can't believe the speedway isn't selling them and giving the money to a charity or something.

Are they building a new one? Or just getting rid of it?

Fred Nation , Executive Vice President , Indianapolis Motor Speedway , announced back on December 16th that after a year of consideration to a possible refurbishing of the existing motel or the construction of a new replacement , the decision was made to eliminate the historic structure. For the time being , the eventual cleared property becomes additional parking space.

The building was seen as simply too outdated to upgrade. The closing terminated 15 employee positions. The recession has hit IMS as a hiring freeze was also implemented. It is unlikely that the speedway will ever fund the new construction of another hotel. A company such as Marriott , Hilton , Hyatt , etc. is being courted to make the investment but it will not happen in this economy , if ever. :icon_smile_blackeye

What would be cool is to replace it with a IMAX theatre, during the day they could have an Indy 500 IMAX movie for the people visiting the museum, and at night show the new movies that come out on IMAX. During the Brickyard they could show a NASCAR IMAX.

I am in favor of a large resort, condo, convention center taking over that spot. Something that can wow sponsers during the races, and hold banquets during the winter

The museum also needs to be updated and enlarged but everything takes time and money

Do you know what the status of the new plaza that was going to be outside of 1&2 curentlly is?
