Sid Collins , the " Voice of the 500 " , famed announcer of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Racing Network gave a moving , impromptu eulogy at the close of the "500" radio broadcast in 1964 for driver Eddie Sachs who had lost his life that day.

It has been widely reported that some 30,000 or more people had written requests to Sid to ask for a copy of that eulogy. I assume he complied and mailed it out.

Would anyone have a copy or know of a possible archive containing the words spoken by Sid on that day ?

Life-long followers of the "500" will know exactly what I am speaking of.
Thanks !

That impromptu eulogy is what made me believe that Sid Collins was a man among boys in his field. Talk about being able to think on your feet! What a class act. BTW...that accident was my very first experience as a 10 year old boy sitting in Stand J at his very first Indy 500. What an impact that had on me. I'll never forget it.

Hi Paul,

You may already have this but for those who don't, you should. Go to the link below, scroll down to "Great moments from the Indy 500". It's a must buy!
I bought the album in 1974 or so and bought the CD recently and put it on my ipod.
It has Sid's eulogy of Eddie in it's entirety and it's original broadcast. I just listened to it. Kinda gives you chills.
David.

Jaryd , you were born 12 years after Sid's death.

The last "500" broadcast delivered by Sid Collins was May of 1976 at the age of 53.
Hardly an " old man " as you describe.

Sid died prior to the '77 event on May 2nd , 1977 at the age of 54.

Sid was known for signing off with a serious thought or poetry , including this one -

" If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined , he will meet with a success unexpected "

I think you are thinking of Tom Carnegie. Sid Collins was the radio announcer who died in 1977.

Carnegie was 86 or 87 years old when he announced his last 500 over the PA system at the track. And I miss hearing him too during the month of May.
