This is why race tracks should have the best fencing possible with steel cables.

I couldn't agree more. Fencing is critically important for driver, crew and fan safety. Safety IS NOT a personal choice. If we don't all, collectively, require safer tracks and proper use of safety equipment, then lawsuits will put tracks out of business, sponsors will drop the sport, insurance premiums will rise, and worst of all, people will be maimed or killed. Ultimately, we will all be left without racing (and we know how long we can last without racing, about 35 days...)

I am truly thrilled that the light pole was there to stop that barrel-rolling sprinter and that things didn't end up significantly worse. Believe me, we know first hand how terrifying it is to have a car headed into the grandstands. But it's not the light pole's job to stop a car. And light poles haven't traditionally been kind to drivers. The comments in the Facebook post were generally reasonable, but those few commentors that don't believe there is a responsibility to make racing venues safer really confuse and infuriate me.

And by the way, we don't build and drive these things to create spectacular crash videos...

That video was amazing. There are several glaring safety issues in this video. How people can continue to put themselves in bad positions amazes me. Finally, I agree with Pitdad, light poles are notoriously bad for race car drivers.

I don't care how good a fence you have there, that is NOT a place for people to stand or sit and watch race cars.
