Not only is Hmiel running the Midget and Silver Crown events at Phoenix on Thursday, he will also be contesting the Western World at Manzanita on Friday and Saturday. Here is a link to a story I just read on Shane and his dad Steve. Really interesting read! Good luck to him...

A very good read. Shane, despite everything that's happened, is an unbelievably good driver. Hope he does well on the Phoenix/Manzy swing...

When he raced nascar he wrecked a few cars in the first 20 laps of races, im just glad to know that he wasn't on drugs when he did it.

I'm going to have to admit that I never was a Shane Hmiel fan while he was in the NASCAR ranks. He was a good race car driver, but it was his attitude that didn't sit too well with me, at all. He seemed to be a "punk", for lack of a better term. With that being said, I really enjoyed reading this article and it might even shed some light on his actions. No, it's not an excuse, but it might explain some things.
Shane showed that he had talent then, but I think his will to win now is even more impressive. He's in cars that he's never driven before. He's been through some serious times in his life. His attitude and perspective seem to have changed, for the better, for sure. He seems on the right track and realizes that all he wants to do is race and have fun doing it. That's what it's all about for us, as fans. On top of that, he's already won, including his first time in a midget. The kid is good and I hope that we get to see this kid with a full-time USAC ride (or two) next year. |

In an April 2008 interview for ESPN, Fike admitted to years of painkiller abuse, as well as heroin use on race days.
While there is precedent for drivers who struggle with substance abuse, there is no previous precedent for drivers who are arrested while using, or in possession of, an illegal substance. Fike has talked with NASCAR regarding the reinstatement process. He returned to racing midget cars at Angell Park Speedway and the USAC national tour after his NASCAR suspension. (as per wikipiedia) I don't think its wise for a driver to claim he "used" during races if he wants to continuo racing in nascar. Shane Hmiel had the sense to claim he never used during a race and I look for him to get back in one day because hes fixed of getting his fix.:wink Here is my question, who the hell is Shane Hmiel the race car driver without Steve Hmiel the amazingly brilliant minded, hard working dad who darn near everyone in nascar respects greatly? No doubts he was fast, but he was very careless and ignorant too. I think there are many other deserving butts for those seats, but they are are in seats of bread trucks as a wise man once said.(someone Hmiel claimed as his greatest influence)
