Quick Indy 500 transportation question

Got a friend who insists on taking public transportation from downtown Indy for the 500 on Sunday. I'm trying to talk him out of it, but he's Canadian. Anybody have any experience with taking public transportation to the speedway day of the the race? Is it good or a pain in the arse? What's the wait like after the race for the public transportation?

That have shuttles from the airport and one of the downtown hotels.

It’s been several years since I’ve taken a shuttle but I don’t remember the wait being terribly long after the race.

(just my experience) ...pre-race = perfect, after the race, when everyone wants to leave at once, a nightmare.
