A heads up to all USAC competitors and race fans traveling to Phoenix, I10 is being widened on the west side of town, starting where the 101 & 10 meet and continuing into the town of Goodyear. This will effect travel to PIR, the construction is mainly taking place in the center median for the addition of new lanes. This area is normally backed up going west simply from the 101 & 10 merging together. Rather than staying on I10 thru the construction you might want to exit at 99th Ave. and either take Van Buren St. or Mc DowellRd. to Avondale Blvd. Van Buren St. parellels I10 to the south and would probably be easier for big rigs turning off I10 at 99th, Mc Dowell parellels I10 to the north and is a straight run out to Avondale Blvd. from the hotels at 83rd and 51st Avenues.

I have been in the area of the construction twice since I got home, luckily I was traveling eastbound to go north on the 101, and eastbound traffic was moving smoothly. Westbound traffic was at a complete crawl where the two highways merge until about Litchfield Rd..

I haven't been down to Manzy yet however friends tell me there is still construction going on in that area as well.

For those of you driving from the mid-west I encountered repaving on I44 in Oklahoma, and some major road construction on I40 in New Mexico.

Safe travels,

Patti

Your welcome Brucer', you described it exactly the way I see it "A Cluster Mess".

I was asked today if you could by pass the construction by taking the 101 or 202?
That answer is no. For anyone coming into Phoenix by way of I17 to the 101 West/South, when you hit I10 West, you are merging from the 101 right where the construction starts. Going east from the 101 is no problem, you can head for Manzy or any of the hotels east of the 101 with only the large volume of everyday Phoenix traffic to deal with. The last exit off of the 101 before you merge onto I10 is Mc Dowell Rd., I would suggest turning right on Mc Dowell and following that to Avondale Blvd. The 202 comes into I10 east of the construction and will take you right thru the construction to get to PIR. The construction is taking place in the I10 corridor of Avondale & Goodyear, there are no lane restrictions, just way too much traffic all trying to merge together at the same spot on the best of days; hence the long overdue widening of the road.

Mc Dowell Rd. that I am telling everyone to turn on is a fast growing commercial area, there will be traffic lights to contend with, the traffic flows pretty good thru this area. Also the first traffic light on Mc Dowell will be 99th Ave. you could turn left there and drop down to Van Buren St., turn right and follow Van Buren to Avondale Blvd., turn left and head for PIR.

New twist to this Cluster Mess of Road Construction. I realized yesterday that one lane off the off ramps thru this constrution site is closed down at all intersections. They must have the left hand lane closest to the center median closed for safety reasons. This was creating a major back up at the Avondale Blvd. Westbound off ramp last night about 7:30 P. M., just another reason why you need to get off of I10 before Avondale Blvd.. Making the left hand turn onto Avondale Blvd. from I10 will be a nightmare. As we get closer to race week they usually have any special race weekend traffic paterns listed in the paper, I will keep everyone posted.
