Jordon Mallett claims USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour presented by K&N Filters 2017 sprint car National Championship

Atlanta, GA – November 24, 2017 – Jordon Mallett from Greenbrier, Arkansas will wear the crown as the United Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters Outlaw Thunder Tour National Champion of the the series’ twenty-first and 2017 racing season. The young sprint car driver made six visits to the www.rockauto.com USCS victory lane as the series feature winner during 2017. Mallett had 24 top five finishes and a total of 34 top ten finishes while he used a record of perfect attendance during the forty events to accumulate the most Championship points. Mallett will collect top honors in two dirt divisions of the USCS points system including the USCS Southern Thunder regional dirt series as well. He finished in second place in the USCS Deep South Thunder Tour and in third place in the USCS Mid-South regional series standings. Mallett finished the National title chase with 5726 National Championship points.

Eleven-time USCS National Champion, Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee who had 5601 points followed Mallett in the runner-up position in the final standings. Gray also had a solid season with 18 top five finishes and the results found him 32 times in the top ten. As a team owner he faired even better, as his team-mate Morgan Turpen had a series leading nine wins.

In addition to her nine wins, the two-time and the defending series Champion, Morgan Turpen from Cordova, Tennessee had 22 of her finishes in the top five and she had 32 top ten finishes to earn enough points with 5142 points to place her third in the final National point standings although she missed four events. Turpen, who was the series 2010 Rookie of the Year, additionally continued four straight seasons of Championship runs as she did garner titles in both the tough USCS Mid-South and the new USCS Deep South regional series.


The 2012 USCS Rookie of the Year, Jeff Willingham from Ripley, Mississippi finished the 2017 season in fourth position. He will also collect fourth place honors in the USCS Deep South Thunder regional series to go with a top five (5th) in the USCS Southern Thunder Tour and sixth place honors in the USCS Mid-South Thunder regional series during the January USCS banquet in Atlanta.

Ft. Myers, Florida’s traveling sprint car racer Tony Agin possibly towed the most miles to USCS 2017 events in his first full season as a United Sprint Car Series regular. Agin improved on past season performances and garnered enough Championship points along the way to finish in fifth place in the National point standings. Agin will also receive accolades as the fifth-place finisher in the new USCS Deep South Thunder Tour portion of the schedule. He finished sixth in the USCS Southern Thunder and seventh in the USCS Mid-South regional series as well.

Veteran USCS driver, Brian Thomas from Pendergrass, Georgia finished in sixth place in the National point stndings. Thomas also finished in the top five in the USCS Southern Thunder Tour standings in fourth place after a string of top ten finishes and a perfect attendance record in that regional series.

Seventeen year-old Brandon Taylor from Cumming, Georgia, who was the 2013 UCS 600 Sprint Car Series mini sprint Rookie of the Year, garnered the 2017 United Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters National Rookie of the Year honors. The award goes annually to the driver who has earned the most Championship points during their first season of competition prior to competing in 25 sprint car events. Taylor had a couple of top five and seven top ten finishes. Taylor aso had some other impressive runs that resulted in DNF’sfor mechabica reasns or he would have finished even higher. The USCS sprint car Rookie of the Year also pulled double duty some nights and had enough points in the USS Mini Sprints to finish sixth in the standings and pickup a win as well.at Senoia Racway.

The 2016 USCS “Rookie of the Year”, fifteen-year-old Danny Sams III from Northport, Florida had a pair of top five finishes in second place and 13 top ten finishes to finish in eighth place in the final National standings while garnering ninth place in the USCS Southern Thunder regional series. The talented young gun would have possibly finished much higher after a third place finish in 2016 in the National standings, but, a mid-season engine failure kept him out of competition for severa weeks.

The 2013 USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour presented by K&N Filters National Champion, Derek Hagar from Marion, Arkansas placed ninth in the USCS 2017 National standings, Hagar raced primarily in the Mid-South regional series but, ventured out several times and collected six 2017 feature wins in USCS competition along the way. He had 13 top five and 14 top 10 finishes on the season as well. Hagar finished in second place in the USCS Mid-South Thunder Tour regional series just 19 points behind USCS Mid-South Champion Morgan Turpen. He also finished in sixth place in the new USCS Deep South regional series .

Veteran USCS competitor Joe Larkin from Suwannee, Georgia who mostly competed in the Southern Thunder region, also joined the field for several Mid-South regional series weekends. Larkin drove his #33 Mark Brack wrenched sprint car to a top ten finish in the USCS National point standings in tenth place. Larkin also finished in the eighth position in the USCS Southern Thunder Tour title chase.

In summary after 40 completed events: One hundred and twenty-five different drivers competed in the forty 21st anniversary USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour presented by K&N Filters events. A recor- setting seventeen different drivers won during 2017 USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour main events. Those included Morgan Turpen, who led the series victory column with nine wins. The 2017 National Champion Jordon Mallett and the 2013 Champ, Derek Hagar from Marion, Arkansas followed her with six wins each. Past series Champions Tim Crawley from Benton, Arkansas and Marshall Skinner from Marion, Arkansas were among a group of two-time winners to follow them. That group also included New Jersey’s Robbie Stillwaggon, Lance Moss from Cherryville, North Carolina and Eric Riggins, Jr. from Charlotte, North Carolina who made two visits each to the www.rockauto.com USCS Victory Lane.

Nine other other drivers collected one feature win during the 2017 season including six-time 2016 winner Trey Starks from Puyallup, Washington who won on night one of the season finale at Bubba Raceway Park o November 10th and sprint car racing legend and 3-time World of Outlaws Champion Sammy Swindell from Germantown, Tennessee at Lexington 104 Speedway.

Seven other drivers got their first USCS sprint car win in 2017 including: 3-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion, Tony Stewart, from Columbus, Indiana at Bubba Raceway Parl. Young gun Tyler Clem from Tampa, Florida also won at Bubba Raceway Park on the same weekend. Andy McElhannon from Hernando, Mississippi won at Columbus (MS) Speedway. Rookie contender Scott Hunter from Concord, North Carolina won at Lancaster (SC) Speedway. Dale Howard from Byhalia, Mississippi and Travis Senter picked up their career-first win at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas during the USCS Fall Nationals. Sunbury, Pennsylvania/s Mark Smith put a cap on the 21st USCS racing season by winning the finale at Bubba Raceway Park.
