Brady Short Captures Record Seventh Bloomington Sprint Car Crown
September 27, 2017, Bloomington, Indiana – Bedford, Indiana’s Brady Short wrapped up the 2017 sprint car racing season at Bloomington Speedway with a thrilling victory in the Fall Sprint Car Double and put a cap on his seventh track sprint car championship.
The seventh title extends his record for the most sprint car championships in the storied track’s history, and gives Brady two more than Kevin Briscoe’s total of five. Not only was Short the only driver to compete in all eight point events completed this year, his three victories was the most wins of the season. Although the fourth victory, last Friday’s Double, was not a point race, it certainly provided a fitting wrap to his season.
“It’s been a fun year,” he allowed as he relaxed following Friday’s racing with family and the crew for Cam Pottorff’s 11p Sipes Body & Glass and Indiana Stone Works- sponsored Maxim, “It’s my seventh championship and to me, it’s something that – years ago Kevin Briscoe was the best and still is in my eyes driver around here. Growing up and racing modifieds and just watching him, he could do things that were amazing. He won five and he could have definitely won more in more years. This year I just went out and had fun. We stayed in the point lead the whole time and just tried to be consistent without having bad luck or mechanical problems and we did that.”
Short was trailed by Jordan Kinser, who notched four top-5 finishes in seven main events, by just 22 points. Third was Jeff Bland Jr., who scored a victory and had five top-10 finishes in seven point races. It should be noted Bland captured a second win in the first Double feature and at the end of the night was tied with Short in points, but the tie-breaker was the finish in the second feature race giving the overall win to Short. Troy, Ohio’s Lee Underwood took fourth in points. AJ Hopkins, who finished fifth in the standings, tied with Ethan Barrow in points, scored two feature wins. Seventh through tenth in the final points included Tyler Thomas, Hunter O’Neal, Billy Cribbs and Josh Cunningham. Kevin Thomas Jr. registered victories during Indiana Sprint Week and Midget Week USAC events and was eleventh in the points.
