The picture of the 51 was taken at Eldora.
I don't have any guesses on drivers or car owners, but......... I wish sprint cars and their trailers, still looked like that!!

Best guesses are Walkup in #4 New Bremen; Charlie Masters at Salem/Dayton; don't know who's in the Smith 70 but it's obviously Winchester; Tommy Astone in the 36 at Terre Haute; several guys ran the 51, not sure who did this day....hope it helps or triggers others' memories!

I blew up the pic of the Smith 70 and the Koehler 51 as best I could That looks like Darl Harrison's (no relation) open face helmet and leather face mask in the #70, and I believe Billy Engelhart's name is on the side of the 51. I remember him driving this car on more than one occasion.
Love seeing these photos - saw many of these in person back in the day!

In my mind these were the best looking sprinters ever built during this time period.

Bob Evans (not the restaurant guy) drove the #70 Ray Smith car for a while. I'm thinking 1973. It could be Darl Harrison but I don't think it's Curt Waters who also drove it.
Agree with Bruce on the Koehler #51 being Engelhart. Looks like a long-ish name on the car. Dave, I second your observation whitout a doubt.

Didn't Joe Saldana drive the #70 a time or two? Again, just going by my lousy memory.

I do remember Joe driving a 70 car for a Mike Winbald, or maybe Winblad, out of Tipp City, Ohio. The car was sponsered by Tipp Machine. They also had a champ dirt car, but I'm don't remember if Joe drove it or not. |

as far as the 51 sprint car,it was bought by my dad (bud graham) and he ran the car in 1976 as a blue 51 with billy englehart, then in 77 it came out white and englehart, howerton and brief single events with gilly cassella, and dana carter.
id love to find it,we sold it at the end off 77,so if anyone has info, please let me know |

Joe Saldana did drive the Smith Speed Shop Dirt Champ car in 1974 and again in 1978; but I don't know anything about the sprinter.
