Westfall Leads Cavalry Charge From 14th to 1st

The Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series was once again invited to the Kokomo Sprint Car Smackdown to join the United States Auto Club for the 8th annual event. The race fans were rewarded with a 42 car field. A half dozen drivers in the main event resembled a cavalry charge through the 24 car main event field, each advancing 10 or more positions. Pleasant Hill, Ohio's Matt Westfall started 14th and drove to the lead to score the win in the Marshall Motorsports 33M.

The five heat race groups were led in qualifying by Dallas Hewitt, Logan Hupp, Ty Tilton, Westfall and Travis Hery. Eight lap heat races were claimed by Matt Cooley, J.J. Hughes, Michael Fischesser, Carmen Perigo and Andrew Prather. A pair of twin 10 lap B-Main events were won by defending BOSS Smackdown champion Mike Miller and 2019 Lernerville feature winner, Justin Owen.

Travis Hery and Carmen Perigo, in a pair of number 21 cars, brought the field to the green flag for the 25 lap main. Hery grabbed the early lead and would show the way for the first 11 circuits. The only 2 repeat winners on the 2019 tour were on the move early. Dallas Hewitt started 10th in the Keen 18 and was knifing his way through the field with 14th starting Westfall in tow.

Hewitt stole the lead from Hery working lap 12 when the race's first of 3 red flags flew for Ty Tilton who took a nasty ride down the front straight. He climbed from the car and walked away. Back under green, Hewitt set sail for the record books, in hopes of becoming the first 3 time winner of 2019. Then, running on the ragged edge of the Kokomo cushion, he tagged the wall and went for a tumble in turns 1 and 2, ending a fine run. He was okay.

With 9 laps remaining, Matt Westfall was now the leader with Hery in the runner-up slot and Dustin Webber having his best career run in 3rd. Looking for his first ever sprint car win, Hery made several valiant attempts to take the lead, side by side with Westfall. On the final circuit, Lee Underwood had a hub break, sending him on a wild ride into turn one. He also climbed out unhurt.

A one lap shootout gave Hery one final shot. But Westfall was not to be denied taking his 3rd win of the year. Hery held on for his career best BOSS finish in second. Carmen Perigo, Logan Hupp and Dustin Webber completed the top 5. Chris Phillips charged from 19th to finish 6th with Andrew Prather 7th. Bill Rose adanced 9 spots to finish 8th. The rest of the cavaly charge were 9th place Mike Miller from 21st, 10th place Justin Owen from 22nd and 11th place Kory Crabtree from 23rd.

Twenty of the 24 starters completed the main event with all 20 on the lead lap. BOSS extends a sincere thank you to USAC, Kokomo Speedway, our race teams and race fans for inclusion in the Smackdown. The next tour event is Saturday, September 7th at Montpelier Motor Speedway in Montpelier, Indiana.
