+Just noticed that I had yet to post any retro results from the Dayton Speedway. I know most here prefer dirt. I do as well, but if you never got the opportunity to see the sprints on the high banks, especially Dayton, back in the late 60's, you missed some spectacular racing and breathtaking action.

+Dayton Speedway had been dark for four years until Earl Baltes came along in '67 to promote races there.
+Greg Weld, with his finish here, regained the points lead and held it to the end of the season to become the youngest USAC sprint driving champ at age 23. Rollie Beale, Greg's chief competition for the title, had broken a leg flipping in a previous event (Reading, maybe).
+Sonny Ates was scary fast at Dayton in the Iddings car. Remember, this was before roll cages. Not to diminish the courage of later and current drivers, but these guys were the bravest of the brave IMO.
+Don Brown's creations were masterpieces. He and Jerry Weeks built especially magnificent racecars.
+The #7 Oakie Spl. was owned by Lawrenceburg bookmaker Oakie Draut. The car won some 'Burg track championships with Ross Smith driving.
+Omar Williams (Channel 2 in Dayton) and Tom Hamlin (Channel 7 in Dayton) were the track announcers. They also handled announcing chores at some other tracks. Eldora and New Bremen come to mind. Always had the impression that Omar was a big time racing fan but that Tom was there for a paycheck. Hamlin would often have the wrong drivers in the wrong cars in hot laps. Most loyal fans knew the drivers by their helmets.

Thanks Marv for another Classic. Dayton was another track that was shuttered prior to my arrival here in the Hoosier State. I always appreciate you taking the time to these results. I wish that I could have seen at least one race on the high banks. Thanks again for sharing.

My dad's car was the one driven by Billy Mehner.
The #49 was a Dale Doty built car. It was owned by Jr. Heffner, of Troy, Ohio.
The #89 car driven by Jerry Poland, was a CAE chassis and could he make that car go. That car is waiting to be restored.
The #31 car that Gil Hess drove for Bill Johns, later became the Mauri Amerling car in which he was fatally injured in at Salem, in 1970. Just talked to Bill Johns about 2 months go.

Yeah Danny, I've thought about that. Maybe the younger folks aren't as interested in events that predate their time in racing as we are in the 40's, 50's, and so forth. I can't get enough history pics and reading concerning Mauri Rose, Wilbur Shaw, Bill Holland and later Sam Hanks, Jimmy Bryan, Pat Flaherty, et al, all of whom were out of action before I started attending events. I have previously posted a few retro results from the early 90's. I got lazy and quit recording results about then so that's the most recent stuff I have. I get the idea that some of the old codgers like yourself enjoy these off-season looks back in time. Maybe someone else will step up and do some more recent stuff.

I am 49.5 years old and love reading your results from races years ago. I grew up 9 miles from the Dayton Speedway. I could hear the cars on Sunday mornings standing in my backyard located in Singing Hills, on a high area just east of West Carrollton. Dayton Speedway was a very special place that will never be duplicated.I am so glad that I was able to witness many breathtaking events at that track.

Well....I was 16 years old watching this race...billed as the "Triple 33's" Sure would like to know where the last 46 years went!! Winchester, Salem were great (and still are) but there was something about Dayton that always made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Omar Williams was a great announcer.

As far as I know Ross Smith still is with us. He was honored a few years ago at the "Legends of Lawrenceburg" night. Still looked like he could take a sprint car out for some fast laps.
