A LOOK BACK: 1994 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON

Doug Kalitta, of Ann Arbor, Mich. wheeled his Kalitta Air Ambulance Special to a trio of feature victories at Winchester and ended up claiming the 1994 Loctite/USAC National Sprint Car championship.

Kalitta was one of 15 different race winners in the 27-race series but had to hold off points challenger Tray House in the series finale at Winchester to clinch the crown.

House, who scored an absolutely awesome runaway victory at Eldora in August and added the “Jim Hurtubise Classic” at Terre Haute in July, led the standings through most of the season but virtually saw the title slip away in a crash during the “4-Crown Nationals” at Eldora in September.* He ended up 43 points short of Kalitta at season’s end.

Kevin Thomas took third in the final standings and notched a feature victory at Paragon in June.

The series suffered a severe blow in May when three-time defending champion and 1994 point leader Robbie Stanley was fatally injured at Winchester.* Stanley had earlier won the “Rich Vogler Classic” at the same track.* Later in the season, Page Jones was critically injured in a crash while leading the “4-Crown Nationals” at Eldora.* On July 2, Jones won the feature at Berlin in his first-ever USAC Sprint Car start.

Mike Bliss was the winningest driver in the series, taking all four races at Indianapolis Raceway Park, including three nationally-televised by ESPN, plus three others, including the first for USAC on the newly-reshaped and lengthened Louisville Motor Speedway.

Frankie Kerr, Cary Faas and Kenny Irwin, Jr. were double victors in 1994, Irwin’s wins coming at Salem (including the 50-lap Joe James/Pat O’Connor Memorial) and Kerr’s both coming at Eldora.* Faas won the “Tony Hulman Classic” thriller over Stanley at Terre Haute and the USAC Sprint debut at Portsmouth.

Other race winners included Jack Hewitt, who recovered from serious 1993 injuries to win at I-96.* A later victory at Eldora in August ended in disqualification of his car and victory for Kerr.* Jon Stanbrough’s first USAC win came in the “Robbie Stanley Classic” at Lawrenceburg, while Chet Fillip and Kevin Doty also notched USAC Sprint firsts, Fillip won at Salem and Doty took the “4-Crown Nationals” at Eldora.

Dave Darland (at K-C Raceway) and Tony Elliott, who scored a last-lap win at Santa Fe, rounded out the winner’s list.
