A LOOK BACK: 2002 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON

Tracy Hines never had the chance to chase anyone during the 2002 Stoops Freightliner print Car Series season.* That’s because the 30-year-old native of New Castle, Ind. led the series point standings wire-to-wire.

Hines took the first two events of the season and posted a second-place finish at Winchester, then withstood a fierce challenge from series runner-up J.J. Yeley to post his second USAC National Championship.* Hines won the Silver Crown title in 20000

“It was a great season for us,” Hines said.* “We started off with the first two wins.* Then from there, we just kind of leveled off and had very consistent runs.”

It didn’t take long for Hines to reach his highest point in the series, aside from winning the championship.* After winning the season opener at Anderson (Ind.) Speedway, Hines took his Dynamics, ,Inc. racecar to Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway, and left the track with his second-straight win after leading all 25 laps from the pole.

“That car was just awesome from practice to qualifying to the race,” Hines said.* “I’m usually a really good qualifier, and we ran the second lap of the race faster than our qualifying speed, so to have a car that nice for that many laps, is just great.”

In addition to winning the race, Hines gave the Hoffman Racing team a series-record 52nd USAC Sprint Car victory, while posting an all-time series race speed record of 138.306 mph!

Hines built a cushion in the points after Nazareth by posting six-straight top-six finishes, including a victory at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.* A 20th place finish at Indianapolis Raceway Park, after leading 27 of the first 29 laps, gave him his worst finish of the season to that point and tied his worst finish of the entire season.

That’s when Hines’ point lead began to fold slightly.* He finished eighth in the opening round of the Buckeye Nationals at Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park, then secured eight-straight top-fives, including five top-threes.* However, J.J. Yeley was able to finish in the top-three seven times during the same stretch and used the fast qualifying points to his advantage.* Going into the second round of Indiana Sprint Week at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Ind., Hines lead was set at 79 points.

Tracy finished ahead of J.J. at Putnamville but collided with Yeley and took 20th in the feature, the first of three-straight races finishing no higher than 10th.* He grabbed a third at Lawrenceburg Speedway and a 10th at Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway before scoring four-straight top-fours heading into the season finale at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.* Hines watched Yeley cross the line first at Terre Haute, but finished second to claim the crown by 13 points.

“This title means a lot because we led it from the start,” Hines said.* “We led the points all year long and to lose it in the last race would have been very disappointing.

“We pretty much did the last 8-10 races where we just did what we needed to do to get the title,” he said.* “We wish we could have raced a lot harder but being so close to winning the title, you get into a kind of different mode where you start racing almost too conservatively, but you think a lot more than you normally do.”

Hines said it was an honor to drive for the Hoffmans, who now own a record 53 feature victories in USAC Sprint Car competition.* He acknowledged that his hero, the late Rich Vogler, drove for the Hoffman team, and said driving for the team Vogler drove for was great.

“The chemistry of that team has just helped my driving tremendously,” Hines said.* They taught me a lot in certain areas.* Just the combination was pretty potent for us.”
