Story by SkinnyKennysPhotos:
Waynesfield Raceway Park was in action on Friday September 4th, 2009. This special Friday race provided a real treat for sprint car fans. Non-wing 410 sprints, winged 360 sprints cars, tuff trucks, and the front wheel drive compacts were all on the schedule to compete.
The fire breathing 410 non-wing sprints were the 1st cars to race the high banks. Dustin Smith and Luke Hall would fill the front row line up for the feature event by way of the invert drawing. The fans attention was focused on 7th place started Matt Westfall. He has been hot at Waynesfield this season by winning 4 non-wing sprint races, including the last 2 in a row. Hall would grab the lead at the start of the race while Westfall started passing cars on his charge towards the front. Hall would build up a small lead until a caution flag would slow the field. Kevin Thomas Jr was now running in the 2nd position with Westfall in 3rd. When the racing was back underway, Westfall passed Thomas and then took the lead from Hall. Thomas would eventually work around Hall but a new player was entering the game. 12th place starter Corey Smith made it to Westfall's bumper with just a few laps remaining in the race. Smith had made a strong run through the field but couldn't quite get any farther. Westfall would earn his 3rd win in a row followed by Smith and Thomas. Dustin Smith, Thomas, and Tommy Kerce were the heat race winners with Mark Hery winning the non-wing sprint b-main.
The Waynesfield tuff trucks were the next group of racers to take to the dirt. Ryan Dunlap and Bill Gross would lead the trucks to start the race. Chris Hicks started 3rd and would be the leader by the time the trucks completed lap #3. Hicks would pull out to a good lead and it began to look like he was going to dominate this race. Lapping the slower traffic would become the stiffest competion for Hicks throughout the race. Hicks would often encounter other trucks running 2 or 3 wide across the track as they fought for position. With just 2 laps remaining in the race, Tim Dick had caught Hicks in traffic but wasn't able to find any better way through the congestion. Hicks would go on to the win followed by Dick and Matt Twining. Dick, Twining, and Darren Noffsinger earned the tuff truck heat wins earlier in the night.
When the winged 360 sprints pulled onto the racing surface to line up for their feature race, the fans knew it would be a barn burner. Mike Brecht and Tim Allison were in the front row with NRA champion JR Stewart lining up 3rd. Allison and Brecht would run side by side for the 1st few laps of the race until a yellow flag was thrown for JR Stewart who had spun to a stop in turn #4. Stewart would rejoin the field at the tail but would only run a few more laps before pulling off the track. His official finish of 20th place cost him the points championship at Waynesfield since this was the final points race of the year for the 360s.
As the racing restarted, Brecht and Allison continued their fierce battle for the top spot. By this point, 5th place starter Luke Hall was in position to join the fight. Allison, Brecht, and Hall would spend the next ten laps of the race sliding in front of each other and trading positions in every turn of the racetrack. The final caution of this feature would give the men a 3 lap shootout to the finish. Hall got a great restart and stayed on the lower side of the track while Allison ran up against the wall. Hall would take his 1st sprint win of the season by 2 car lengths over Allison at the checkers with Brecht rounding out the top 3. The 360 sprint heat wins were recorded by Allison, Stewart, and Ron Blair with Cory Crabtree winning the b-main. His 2nd place finish gave the track points champion title to Tim Allison.
The front wheel drive compacts would be the final race of the night at Waynesfield. Dustin Young and Harvey Yoder brought the cars around to start the race. The race was quickly stopped when something broke on Josh Lutz's car causing him to hit Don Ebright and send both cars flipping. Both drivers escaped without injury even though the cars sustained extensive damage. David Yoder led the race until the 3rd row starters Jeff Kimes and Justin Durflinger made it a 3 way battle for the lead. Kimes has won every race in the compact division this season but his streak would come to an end on this night. Kimes was leading when the white flag waved but Durflinger and Yoder were in striking distance. Durflinger drove hard into the final turn and found enough grip with his tires to edge Kimes at the flagstand with Yoder finishing a close 3rd. Compact heats were won by Kimes and Durflinger.
Waynesfield Raceway Park will not be racing this coming weekend. We will return to our weekly race program on Saturday September 19th, 2009. The schedule has UMP Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Tuff Trucks, and Compacts providing the entertainment.
The racing starts at 7:00pm. More info can be found at www.waynesfieldmotorsportspark.com
