Waynesfield Raceway Park treated the fans to a special discount on admission for the Saturday July 27th racing program. Adult fans were admitted to watch 5 different classes of racing for just $5.00. Promoter Dean Miracle set this special show up as a "Thank You" to the fans that have supported Waynesfield this season and to try to intoduce new fans to the sport of dirt track auto racing.
The Waynesfield Tuff Trucks were the class to start off the nights feature programs. Jerry Butler and Tim Dick would pace the truck field to starting line as the race began. Dick grabbed the point right away and would lead for the first few laps. Gabe and Matt Twining started the race in the 3rd row and quickly charged their way to the front. The race soon turned into a family affair as Dick tried to hold off both of his brother in laws. Matt Twining made the pass for the lead and then Gabe Twining dropped Dick into 3rd. The 3 of them put on a great show for the fans. "Fat" Matt Twining was able to lead the rest of the race and score his 5th truck win this season at Waynesfield. Gabe Twining finished in the 2nd position with Tim Dick finishing 3rd. Matt Twining, Gabe Twining, and Derrick Noffsinger won the truck heat races.
Rod Henning and Tyler Hesson would lead the 600cc mini-sprints to the green flag to start their feature. Henning was fresh off a win from his last trip to Waynesfield and was here to proove that win was no fluke. The young man went on to dominate the rest of the mini-sprints and score back to back wins at Waynesfield. Garry Loney made his way into the 2nd position but could never reel in Henning with Devon Dobie finishing 3rd. Becca Siefel and Loney recorded the mini-sprint heat race wins.
Tonight would see a long awaited return to the Waynesfield dirt track. The front wheel drive Compacts would pull onto the track to run their 1st race since 2007. Eleven of the little cars were on hand with many more currently being built. David Yoder worked his way into the lead during the beginning of the race from his 4th place starting position. Yoder started to stretch out a big lead and it looked like the race was gonna be over. Jeff Kimes had another plan. Kimes had raced at Waynesfield in 2007 and his dirt track experience began to kick in. During the final three laps of the race, Kimes overcame his big deficit. He was able to catch and pass Yoder to steal the win. Yoder finished 2nd followed by Jordan Flynn. Compact heats went to Kimes and Brian Beach. Kimes' win allowed him to choose a case containing a prize while parked in front of the fans. When he opened his case, it contained a band new $50 bill.
The always exciting UMP Modifieds would take to the high banks for their feature event as the sun was setting over Waynesfield Raceway Park. Bill Keeler and Frankie Luchini would bring the modifieds to the green. Keeler went straight to the high side of the track and started to pull away from the rest. A yellow flag slowed the cars while the safety crew attended to a hard crash in turn 4 involving Brian Post and Marvin Schilling. Both cars sustained extensive damage and the track security officers were quickly on scene to keep the furious drivers away from each other. When the racing resumed, "Hippy"Keeler clicked off lap after perfect lap. About lap 12, the fans and race crews were beginning to smile. Keeler has been racing at Waynesfield and other local tracks for many years and it was beginning to look like this fan favorite might finally get his career 1st UMP Modified feature win. Maybe his nerves got the best of him, or maybe he could just sense that Jeff Babcock was coming, but Keeler made a couple of bobbles in turn 4 on laps 15 and 16. By this time Babcock had come from his 8th place starting spot and was on Keelers bumper. Babcock was able to take advantage of Keeler's mistake and power past him. Babcock went on to lead the final 3 laps and earn another modified victory at Waynesfield ahead of Keeler and Zach Schoeder. Babcock and Brian Post were the UMP Modified heat winners.
The final race of the night would be a Powder Puff race for the ladies. Nine Tuff Truck drivers loaned their racers to the women to compete in this event. Bridget Brunk is seen weekly in the flag stand at Waynesfield directing the races but she would show the fans that flagging is not her only skill at the track. This young lady can drive too. All of the ladies did a great job racing these Tuff Trucks. Bridget Brunk was the race winner with Joanne Poling finishing 2nd and Tana Crossley finishing 3rd. Bridget said that she was dedicating her win to her Uncle Terry. He was a big race fan that passed away last year.
Waynesfield Raceway Park will not be racing on July 4th. The next race will be the UMP Summer Nationals on Friday July 10th featuring the UMP Late Models, Mini-Sprints, Tuff Trucks, and Compacts. The following night, Saturday July 11th will be DARF Night featuring Non-Wing Sprints, UMP Modifieds, Tuff Trucks, and Compacts.
