In celebration of the 50th year of USAC Silver Crown Champ Car racing in 2020, we are reviewing the past 49 years of series history.

1988 USAC SILVER CROWN SEASON REVIEW

Steve Butler emerged from the 1988 Valvoline USAC Silver Crown Championship series with his first title, but the fact that he did not win a single race was testimony to the tremendous consistency that helped him prevail.

Only Jack Hewitt’s victory in the 4-Crown Nationals finale at Eldora Speedway kept all nine different races from having different winners.* Hewitt had previously won the Hoosier Hundred in Indianapolis two weeks earlier.

Driving the Kenny Jarrett Farms Chevy, Butler beat defending series titlist Hewitt for the title by taking fourth and second in the final two races at Salem Speedway and Eldora Speedway.* He was also second in the Pepsi-Cola 150 at Indianapolis Raceway Park, and his only failure to finish came in the Hoosier Hundred, putting added pressure on his need for good finishes in the final two events.

Series participants were enthusiastic about their debut at the Milwaukee Mile in June.* A.J. Foyt’s Skoal Racing Classic 100-miler was possibly one of the most competitive Silver Crown races in the history of the series.* George Snider, driving the Skoal Chevy owned by him and A.J. Foyt, won the race.

The Silver Crown machines returned to the Florida State Fairgrounds for its 1988 opener and Rick Hood came away with the victory, taking the early series lead.* He kept the number one spot after finishing seventh behind winner Chuck Gurney in the Hulman Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May, then relinquished it to Snider after the Milwaukee 100.

Bruce Field scored an upset victory in the IRP 150-lapper in July, but Butler’s second place finish boosted him to third in the standings.

Indianapolis 500 veteran Steve Chassey came from the 20th starting spot to win the Tony Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield in August, grabbing the win as Andy Hillenburg faltered in the final laps while leading.

Gary Bettenhausen, absent from the Silver Crown winner’s circle for some time, returned there at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds on Labor Day, while Butler (fourth) and Snider (third) continued to fight for the point lead.

Hewitt’s Hoosier Hundred triumph came after Snider flipped during pre-race practice and Butler dropped out early with engine problems.* Suddenly, Hewitt found himself still alive in the point race.

Bob Frey’s victory at Salem in September left Butler in command of the points race, although some slim hope remained for both Hewitt and Snider at Eldora.

Steve settled the issue by posting fast qualifying time at the 4-Crown, then leading all but 11 laps of the 50-lapper and finishing second to Hewitt.

Gene Lee Gibson captured Silver Crown Rookie of the Year honors for 1988 while Andy Hillenburg became the series’ Most Improved Driver.

RICK HOOD WINS TAMPA’S SALUTE TO JOLTIN’ JUD LARSON

Tampa, Florida………Rick Hood of Memphis, Tennessee, the 1985 USAC Valvoline Silver Crown series titlist, drove the Rose Brothers Trucking Chevy to victory in the 100-lap Salute to Joltin’ Jud Larson at the Florida State Fairgrounds, leading the second half of the race to beat Floridian Jim Childers and Indiana’s Steve Butler to the checkered flag.

Rick, starting eighth in the 30-car field, trailed defending two-time series champion Jack Hewitt and 1984 series champion Dave Blaney for the first 50 laps before taking the lead on the 51st circuit.* Blaney was the fastest qualifier and led laps 1-13 before Hewitt took over the lead on the half-mile oval.

Blaney, who started on the pole, tangled with another car in turn four while leading on the 14th lap and was a non-finisher.

Rounding out the top-ten were Andy Hillenburg, Doug Wolfgang, Jeff Bloom, Tony Elliott, Bill Tyler and Kenny Jacobs.* Defending race winner Larry Rice was forced out on the first lap of the race in a tangle on the backstretch.

Rain on Saturday forced postponement of the qualifications until Sunday, creating the 30-car starting field for the 100-lap finale.

SNIDER WINS A.J. FOYT’S SKOAL RACING CLASSIC 100-MILER AT MILWAUKEE

West Allis, Wisconsin………George Snider captured the June 26 A.J. Foyt Skoal Racing Classic at the Milwaukee Mile in his Skoal Racing Classic Special, grabbing $11,995 from the total purse of $55,250.

Snider’s triumph came in one of the most competitive USAC races in the history of the club as he outraced Gene Lee Gibson, Johnny Parsons, Jack Hewitt and Bentley Warren, plus a host of other hopefuls in the 100-mile contest at the one-mile Milwaukee Mile.

Snider averaged 104.924 mph for the distance, run with only two minor caution periods.* He was one of six race leaders and grabbed the lead for the final time from Steve Chassey on the 87th circuit.

Johnny Parsons and Gary Bettenhausen earned front row starting positions in qualifying on June 25, Parsons finishing third in the race and Bettenhausen leading early before mechanical problems forced him out.

Snider’s win also catapulted him into the lead in the Valvoline USAC Silver Crown series.* He now leads defending two-time titlist Hewitt by 32 points.

Parsons’ pole speed was 120.866 mph and he led several early laps but Mark Alderson, starting ninth, put on a spectacular driving display, leading most of the first half of the race.* A late-race pit stop relegated him to a disappointing 19th place finish.

HEWITT WINS ELDORA FINALE, BUTLER TAKES SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP

Rossburg, Ohio………Steve Butler is the Valvoline USAC Silver Crown champion for 1988, clinching the title with a runner-up finish behind race winner Jack Hewitt in the 4-Crown Nationals season finale at Eldora Speedway on September 25, claiming the title by a 49-point margin over 1986 and 1987 Silver Crown titlist Jack Hewitt.

Vogler also won the 20-lap True Value Master Mechanic Tools Qualifying Race at Eldora on September 24.* Butler was the fastest qualifier at Eldora and his championship is his first in the Silver Crown series.
