In celebration of the 50th year of USAC Silver Crown Champ Car racing in 2020, we are reviewing the past 49 years of series history.

1995 USAC SILVER CROWN SEASON REVIEW

In 1983, 12-year-old Tony Stewart made a starting proclamation to his father during a trip to Oskaloosa, Iowa for the IKF Dirt Grand National go-kart races.

“I’m going to win it,” he said.

His dad, Nelson, having just cautioned his son about getting his hopes too high, would soon realize what the rest of the nation now knows.* Determination has played a key role in Tony’s success.

A dozen years later, the younger Stewart stood on a plateau no USAC driver had ever reached to that point in the 40-year history of the club.* Nobody, not A.J. Foyt, not Mario Andretti, not even Rich Vogler, who probably had the best chance prior to Stewart, ever seriously challenged for three national championships in the same season.

Stewart’s 1995 USAC True Value Silver Crown, National Sprint and National Midget championships represent one of the most incredible accomplishments in the history of motorsports.

“I never dreamed this was possible,” Stewart related in retrospect.* “I’ve got a lot of respect for guys like Vogler, Foyt and Andretti.* It’s a real honor to be included in that group.”

The son of Nelson Stewart, a former USAC Midget and Silver Crown driver who never really had the best of equipment, Tony realized the importance of having good people around him and gave much of the credit for his success to those who made the Triple Crown possible.

“Dad got me a yard kart (his first ride) but I tore up the yard with it, so he decided to get behind me and help me do it right,” Stewart continued.

The Oskaloosa, Iowa Grand Nationals (his first trip away from his home track in Columbus, Ind.) found Tony facing the challenge of Californian Mike Berg, the defending champion who had 14 karts and 23 engines at his disposal.* He proved to his dad quickly that he wasn’t kidding when he said he was going to win.

Tony’s approach to racing in 1995 did a 180-degree turn from 1994, when he won the USAC National Midget title.

“The experience of running for the title (in 1994) paid off,” Stewart added.* “The early part of the season was a struggle but Bob East and Glen Niebel kept pushing me to be the best I could every race and their support was vital.* I just want to be the best I can every time I race.* That way, I can live with whatever the results are.* When I don’t live up to my potential, that’s hard to accept.”

Of the three USAC National championships he procured in 1995, for Stewart, the Silver Crown title was the most surprising.

“I was just hoping for a top-three finish after the Hoosier Hundred disappointment but our second place at Eldora was great for the whole team.* It got us fired up and the cards just fell in place at Sacramento.* Darland and Hewitt had me beat, for sure.* They were strong all year and we were just fortunate to finish ahead of them.”

Entering the finale at Sacramento, California’s Cal Expo State Fairgrounds, Darland led Hewitt by eight points, and each needed only a top-seven finish to eliminate Stewart from contention.* Stewart needed a second-place finish or better and DNFs by Darland and Hewitt for any chance at the crown.

Darland was the first out of the race, an oil fire putting him on the sidelines only 11 laps into the contest.* Hewitt slid wide and hit the outside wall on lap 33, ending his night, leaving Stewart to chase winner Donnie Beechler to the checkered flag.* The finish gave Stewart a two-point victory over Darland, with Hewitt third in the final ranking.

Stewart became the first driver to win the series crown without a victory since Steve Butler in 1988 and, oddly enough, Stewart never led a lap during the 1995 season!

Consistency, however, played a big part in Stewart’s drive.* Only twice in 10 starts did he fail to finish in the top-10, and he had second places in the final two races to snatch the title away from Dave Darland and Jack Hewitt.

The series began with 15 different lap leaders in the first six races.* In fact, no driver was able to lead more than once during those first six events.

Chuck Leary was rewarded with Silver Crown Rookie of the Year honors while Dave Darland collected the series’ Most Improved Driver award.

$16,796 COPPER WORLD TRIUMPH FOR BLISS

Avondale, Arizona………Mike Bliss of Milwaukie, Ore. captured the opening event of the True Value USAC Silver Crown series at Phoenix International Raceway on February 5.

Bliss’ victory in the 50-mile Skoal Bandit Racing Copper World Classic gave him the early lead in the 1995 series standings.

Bliss averaged a record 130.917 mph in his McClure Racing special to beat George Snider, Jac Haudenschild, Tony Stewart and Ron Shuman to the checkered flag.* Bliss took the lead from Snider on the 39th lap and led the rest of the way for the win, which was worth $16,796 from the total purse of $73,150, which included lap prizes and accessories.

Snider led the first 38 laps of the race after jumping ahead of Bliss on the opening lap.* Jack Runyon finished sixth in the 30-car field, followed by Jim Mahoney, Jack Hewitt, Rocky Hodges and Ray Evans.

Bob Cicconi won Saturday’s 10-mile qualifying race.

Twenty-four of the 30 starters were running at the finish of the race, run entirely without caution flags.

Defending Silver Crown champion Jimmy Sills was forced to the pits early in the contest and eventually finished seven laps behind in the 21st position.

DARLAND WINS A.J. FOYT’S HULMAN HUNDRED AT THE INDY MILE

Indianapolis, Indiana………Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. scored his first True Value USAC Silver Crown victory on May 26 in A.J. Foyt’s 15th Hulman Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

Darland grabbed the pole starting position in his Franklin Power Products machine with a qualifying lap of 105.516 mph, then trailed outside front row starter Eric Gordon for the first 33 laps around the one-mile dirt oval.* Gordon’s engine soured on lap 34 and he retired from the race.

Darland held off repeated challenges from Robby Flock, then Chuck Gurney in the closing laps to win the race.

Gurney, of Livermore, Calif., finished second, with Flock, of Temecula, Calif., taking third.* George Snider of Bakersfield, Calif. finished fourth and moved to the top of the point standings after the event.* He leads Darland and Mike Bliss, who did not compete in the race, by 80 points.

Rounding out the top-10 in the 100-mile race were Rocky Hodges of Des Moines, Iowa, Kevin Doty of Milan, Ill., Chip Thomas of Belleville, Ill., Billy Boat of Phoenix, Ariz., Jon Stanbrough of Avon, Ind. and Russ Gamester of Peru, Ind.

Jack Hewitt won the 15-mile qualifying race and moved rapidly through the field in the 100-miler.* He was challenging for the lead in the late stages before slipping back, then becoming involved in a tangle with Jimmy Sills and Kevin Huntley. *Sills, winner of both Silver Crown races at the track last year, spun while battling for a top-five spot on lap 89 and ended up finishing 16th.

Only two other yellow flags flew during the 100-miler, on lap 48 when Ron Shuman hit the wall in turn three and on lap 67 when Randy Tolsma did likewise.

Darland’s victory was worth $9,100 from the total purse of $40,300.

HEWITT 25TH TO 1ST IN RICHMOND SILVER CROWN DEBUT

Richmond, Virginia………Jack Hewitt of Troy, Ohio scored a spectacular victory in the June 17 USAC Championship Twins 134-lap (100.5-mile) True Value USAC Silver Crown race at Richmond International Raceway.

It marked the 18th win for Hewitt as he held off the determined challenge of Boise, Idaho’s Randy Tolsma in the final laps.

An announced crowd of 17,500 watched as Hewitt, driving the DuPont/J.W. Hunt Produce/Parker Machinery Ford V6 won the 20-lap qualifying race, then came from 25th position in the 30-car field to pass pole starter and new track record holder Jim Keeker for the lead on lap 118.* Keeker slipped to seventh after leading 113 laps of the race around the ¾-mile oval.* Tolsma’s spirited bid to win the race on the final lap fell just short as he settled for second.

Chuck Gurney, Dave Darland and Tony Stewart rounded out the top-five at the checkered flag.

Gurney led the first four lap before yielding to Keeker, who set a track record of 130.845 mph during qualifying.

Four yellow flags slowed the race, the first for Jimmy Sills, who hit the fourth turn wall on lap 42. *He was uninjured.* Other caution periods were for debris, Lou Cicconi Jr.’s trip into the wall in turn one and Gene Lee Gibson’s blown engine.* Gibson’s misfortune set up the final dash to the checkered flag between Hewitt and Tolsma which kept the fans on their feet to the end.

Hewitt’s team earned $15,000 from the total purse of $75,000 and the win boosted him to fourth in the new series standings.

Darland’s fourth-place finish left him with a 10-point lead over Snider, while Gurney holds down the third spot in the new points.

BEECHLER GRABS INAUGURAL SUMAR CLASSIC AT TERRE HAUTE

Terre Haute, Indiana………Donnie Beechler of Springfield, Ill. came from the 15th starting position to win the inaugural Sumar Classic at the Terre Haute Action Track on July 7.

Beechler won the first of two 15-lap qualifying races, then passed Jack Runyon for the lead on the 23rd lap around the half-mile dirt track.* He led the final 78 laps in his Zarounian Olds/Cadillac/Isuzu machine to beat Jack Hewitt and Jimmy Sills to the checkered flag.* Rocky Hodges and Kenny Irwin Jr. rounded out the top-five at the finish.

Robby Flock of Temecula, Calif. won the pole for the 100-lap race at 21.855 seconds but spun in turn one on the opening lap.* Fortunately, he only collected one other car and the race resumed after a brief yellow with Kevin Thomas as the pacesetter.* Thomas led the first 12 laps before yielding to Tony Elliott.* On lap 22, Elliott slowed, allowing Runyon to lead one lap before Beechler shot to the front.* Flock eventually recovered to finish ninth.

Clermont, Indiana………Jim Keeker of Cicero, Ind. captured the 60-lap Yellow Cab 100 True Value USAC Silver Crown race on August 2 at Indianapolis Raceway Park, leading all 60 laps in his MIG Supply/Columbus Container Special.* He won the pole position for the race at a record speed of 119.143 mph.

Tony Stewart, who finished second, emerged as the new Silver Crown point leader, 44 points ahead of Jack Hewitt.* Hewitt retired after 24 laps due to engine problems.

Keeker’s victory was his first since a 1993 Sprint Car race at Salem.* He also won the pole for the June 17 Silver Crown race at Richmond and led most of that race before finishing seventh.

Trailing Keeker and Stewart to the flag were Kenny Irwin Jr., Mike Bliss, Davey Hamilton, Dave Darland, Eric Gordon, Dave Steele, Johnny Parsons and Dan Drinan.

Gordon and Chuck Gurney won the two K & K Insurance Qualifying Races.

IRWIN AWESOME IN 28TH TO 1ST SPRINGFIELD DRIVE

Springfield, Illinois………Kenny Irwin Jr. swept the Tony Bettenhausen 100 events at the Illinois State Fairgrounds on August 19, coming from 28th starting position to win the 100-mile True Value Silver Crown race after leading all 25 miles to win the accompanying Skoal National Midget feature.

Irwin was running second when leader Jimmy Sills’ car started to run short on fuel in the closing laps.* Irwin led the final three laps for the victory, worth $9,000 to his Wynn’s Oil/MP Environmental Services team.

The win boosted Irwin to third in the standings behind Chuck Gurney and Tony Stewart.

Gurney, winner of six of the previous 11 Springfield races, finished second and moved to the point lead as a result.* He leads Stewart by 24 and Irwin by 55.* George Snider came from 23rd position to take third ahead of pole starter Johnny Parsons and 24th starting Robby Flock.

Parsons, starting his 100th Silver Crown event, won the pole at a speed of 112.725 mph and led the first 49 laps.* Sills, the defending series champion, then led the next 48 laps before faltering three laps from the end.* Sills, who started fourth, finished ninth.

Irwin averaged 91.464 mph as the race was slowed by five caution flags.* Dave Darland, winner at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May, was running in the top-five when he hit the third turn wall on lap 91.* He was uninjured.* The final yellow came on the last lap when Gary Hieber hit the wall in turn one.* He also escaped injury.

$24,500 FOR DARLAND AT A.J.’S HOOSIER HUNDRED

Indianapolis, Indiana………Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. won A.J. Foyt’s 43rd Coors Light Hoosier Hundred on September 2 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

The $24,500 in Hoosier Hundred prizes for Darland included a $10,000 bonus from the Tony George Point Fund for winning both 1995 races at the one-mile dirt oval, plus $5,000 in lap prizes and a $500 cash award from Ralph’s Muffler & Brake shops as the Rookie of the Race.

The money total was the second largest in series history at the time behind Jimmy Sills’ 1994 Hoosier Hundred total of $26,000.

Driving the Franklin Power Products machine, Darland passed Chuck Gurney on the 51st lap and led the rest of the way to beat George Snider, Jack Hewitt, Robby Flock and Billy Boat.

Gurney was forced out after 81 laps with mechanical problems.* Pole winner Johnny Parsons and Tony Elliott also led the race, Parsons eliminated by a broken oil line after 22 laps and Elliott losing a lap due to pitting for a new tire.

Randy Tolsma and Kenny Irwin Jr. won qualifying races.

Don O’Keefe, Tyce Carlson, Art Bisch Jr. and Ray Evans all flipped during the Hoosier Hundred activities. Bisch suffered a broken arm.

PARSONS BECOMES TWO-TIME Du QUOIN WINNER

Parsons came back to lead all but 14 miles of the Du Quoin Century in his Hoffman Auto Racing/Stoops Enterprises/Best Farms Special to record his second victory in the annual Labor Day 100-miler.* The 1992 winner slipped behind Gurney for laps 23-36 but Gurney’s car overheated, putting J.P. back in front.

Beechler, the pole winner, finished second ahead of Darland, Hewitt and Boat.

Hewitt’s two top-five finishes in the last two races helped boost him to second in the series standings, while George Snider slipped to third in the points after flipping during the Du Quoin qualifying race, then encountering engine problems in his backup car during the 100-miler.

Tony Elliott won the 15-lap qualifying race.

Along with Snider, Jackie Burke and Jack Runyon also flipped during the Du Quoin program.*

HEWITT NOW A SIX-TIME 4-CROWN SILVER CROWN WINNER AT ELDORA

Rossburg, Ohio………Jack Hewitt of Troy, Ohio scored his sixth 4-Crown Nationals True Value USAC Silver Crown victory on September 23 at Eldora Speedway.

Hewitt won the 20-lap qualifying race over Tony Stewart, then stormed past Dave Darland on the 29th lap and led the rest of the way in his DuPont Automotive Finishes/Café Santa Fe/Dellen-Lincoln-Mercury Special.* Stewart finished second and Darland third, leaving Darland eight points ahead of Hewitt and 155 ahead of Stewart with 200 available heading into the season finale.

Johnny Parsons shot past front row starters Jimmy Sills and Chuck Gurney to lead the first eight laps of the race.* Darland moved to the front on lap nine but yielded to Hewitt on lap 26.* Darland regained the lead on lap 27 but relinquished it again two laps later.

Rounding out the top-10 at the checkered flag were Kenny Irwin Jr. (fourth), Parsons, Eric Gordon, Jimmy Sills, Kevin Thomas, Jim Keeker and Rusty McClure.

Only one yellow flag interrupted the 50-lap contest.* Byron Reed, Jon Stanbrough and Tony Elliott were all forced out of the race after tangling on the front stretch.

Hewitt averaged 90.059 mph for the 50 laps around the half-mile dirt track to claim the $10,000 first place prize.* His previous 4-Crown Silver Crown triumphs came in 1986-88-89-91-94.

Sills posted the fastest qualifying time during preliminaries at 16.994 seconds (105.919 mph).

SACRAMENTO SILVER CROWN FINALE TO BEECHLER; TITLE GOES TO STEWART

Sacramento, California………Donnie Beechler of Springfield, Ill. won the Miller Genuine Draft Silver Crown 100 finale at the Cal Expo State Fairgrounds one-mile dirt oval, leading the final 25 miles in his Zarounian Olds-Cadillac-Isuzu Special.

Beechler inherited the lead when three-time Sacramento winner Jimmy Sills’ machine developed fuel problems.* Sills completed 91 laps and finished 15th after leading 69 of the first 75 laps.* Sills passed early leader Tony Elliott on lap seven and appeared to be headed for his fourth consecutive victory at Cal Expo when the fuel problem halted his drive.

Trailing Beechler at the checkered flag was second-place finisher Tony Stewart of Columbus, Ind. who earned the True Value Silver Crown driving title for 1995.

Stewart, trailing series leader Dave Darland by 155 points going into the race, needed at least a second-place finish, even if Darland and Jack Hewitt, only eight points behind Darland before the race, failed to finish.* Darland was the first driver forced out of the race with an oil leak on lap 12 and Hewitt hit the wall in turn three, dropping out after just 32 laps.* That left the dramatics up to Stewart, who tracked down the ailing Sills machine for second on lap 78 and he followed Beechler the rest of the way.

Stewart’s two-point margin tied the closest finish in Silver Crown history.* Mike Bliss also beat Ron Shuman by just two points to win the title in 1993.

Beechler averaged 93.557 mph for the race, slowed by only four caution periods.* Steve Kent of Fresno, Calif. won the pole for the race at 113.129 mph but was forced out with tire problems after 64 laps.

Richard Griffin won the 15-mile qualifying race.
