I was at this race! It was the first time that I had seen those CRA cars and teams and I was impressed by more than Kinser's performance that day.

I can close my eyes and hear the announcer still during the CRA races that year while the drivers came out and qualified, man he was good and made qualifying exciting! Was the announcer Earls son??? That was something special about Eldora!

I think the announcer was Terry Baltes who I believe was Earl's brother. I was hoping ol Bub would hang in there but Kinser was just to good. Steve stated that was the first time in about ten years he raced with the wing off.

I was there that day, talk about shock when we saw Karl"s rig pull in. I thought maybe Karl had arranged something with Earl that Steve could run some laps with the wing kinda like a practice, but never saw a napkin holder go near that car all night. Ol Steve never even looked rusty running without the foil, I was thinking Here we go when Steve caught up to Ol Bub, but Steve was on a mission that night . I think it was my best night ever at the big E.

I was there as well, I was the crew chief on the second place finishing car driven by Lealand McSpadden. After Lealand got by Bub for second and started to catch Steve, I thought to myself this is going to be a Battle Royal between those two but Lealand couldn't quite catch Steve he just seemed to stall out of the charge he was making with about five laps to go and I couldn't figure out why. Well I got my answer when Lealand pulled into our pit, a large piece of dirt had crushed the side arm guard in and had his right arm pinned between it and the seat so he pretty much ran those last five laps with one arm on the steering wheel. We had to bend the panel back out so he could even get out of the car.

Terry, were you at Eldora a couple of years later when Lealand Hewitt got together in turn 2, that was gnarly?

Yes Jonboat15 I was,and you are correct that was gnarly. What was really wild was that even though the frame was completely gone from the engine forward, the back of the car was barely tore up at all the rearend was still square in the car and the torque ball was still free so we used all that stuff in the new car that we had to build.

Another note is that the very next day Lealand was out with us in the motel parking lot helping to build the new car, pretty tough man in my book!
