AUGUST 25TH - LAWRENCEBURG SPEEDWAY - HORNET NATIONALS / BACK TO SCHOOL BLUES NIGHT

Saturday night August 25th will be “Back to School Blues Night” at the Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, Ind., featuring the “Bessler’s U Pull & Save Hornet Nationals” paying $1,500 to win and $200 to start, the Budweiser UMP Modifieds, and the always popular School Bus races.

For the first time at the Burg, the Hornets will qualify. Due to this, the hornet draw will close at 5:30 pm sharp. The blind pill draw will still be used to set the heat race groups, but lap times gathered during practice will set the heat race lineups. Cars will be lined straight up by time with the fastest four cars in each heat race inverted.

Heat race finish will still determine the lineups for the B Main(s) and feature with the top two finishers in each heat race (if five or more heats only the winners) redrawing for their starting position at the front of the feature field.

Forty-seven car/driver combinations have met the requirements to participate in the Hornet Nationals by competing in at least two prior point races this season. The list of qualified car/drivers is posted on the Lawrenceburg Speedway Facebook page. Only those car/drivers are eligible to compete Saturday.

Cordell Moore would have to be considered the favorite to win Saturday night’s 20-lap feature. The defending track champion is the current point leader and has won four of eight features and all eight of his heat races this season. He also scored a trifecta during the Night of Destruction by winning the Soccer Mom Nationals, Minivan Demo Derby, and the 75-lap Hornet Enduro.

16-year old Bradley Eberhart is the most recent Hornet winner at the Burg, holding off Moore for his second feature win of the season on Saturday night. Eberhart, the 2016 Co-Rookie of the Year, is currently second in points, has six top-ten feature finishes and three heat wins.

2017 Rookie of the Year, Gary Whitt, fell back to third place in the season standings after suffering his first DNF of the year last weekend. Prior to that Whitt had scored top-tens in every feature this year with four top-fives and a best finish of second.

John Hampton is currently fourth in points after passing twelve cars on his way to a fourth-place finish Saturday night, and Travis Butte completes the top five after scoring five top-ten finishes in seven races.

Michael Freimuth II dropped from third place in points down to sixth after missing his first race in two years. Michael had a good excuse, deciding to stay home with his wife Jenn after she gave birth to their son Chase on Thursday.

Six former feature winners are entered Saturday including Moore (7 wins), 2013 track champion Brandon Caudill (5 wins), Matthew Morris (3 wins), Eberhart (2 wins), and single feature winners Katie Smith and Brandon Stephens.

Promoter Dave Rudisell has increased the feature payout for the Hornet Nationals by nearly sevenfold with each starter earning more than the feature winner earns at a regular show! The B Main payout has also been increased with the first non-transfer earning $50, the second non-transfer $40, and all other starters $30.

Hornet Nationals Feature Payout ($7,000 total):
1- $1,500, 2- $850, 3- $550, 4- $450, 5- $350, 6- $300, 7- $280, 8- $260, 9- $240, 10- $220, 11- $200, 12- $200, 13- $200, 14- $200, 15- $200, 16- $200, 17- $200, 18- $200, 19- $200, 20- $200.

Kyle Schornick and the Budweiser UMP Modifieds are also on the card Saturday night for their thirteenth race of the season. Schornick entered last weeks race as the co-point leader with Matt Hamilton, but when the dust settled he was all alone at the top of the standings with a now 155-point lead over Hamilton.

Making their first appearance outside of the Night of Destruction will be the always entertaining School Bus races. Mike Engel in the Big Red Express will be looking to repeat his performance from July 28th where he set quick time, won his heat race and the feature.

Engel’s stiffest competition should come from Josh Shaw in the crowd favorite Shark Bus, and Roger Chrisman in the Shark Hunter, who each have a pair of school bus feature wins under their belts.

Other busses in competition should be the Barbie Bus, Family Truckster, Roll Coal, Bat Bus, General Lee, and more.
