Hupp and Leary score Buckeye Machine BOSS wins in Hoosier Doubleheader

Fantastic racing, packed grandstands, and overflow pit areas made up the theme for the Buckeye Machine BOSS doubleheader this weekend. "Lightning" Logan Hupp became the first driver to strike twice this season on the BOSS tour becoming the first repeat winner as he scored the win at the Whitewater Valley Speedway on Friday night. C.J. Leary scored his second career BOSS win on Saturday as he scored the victory in the "Jason Soudrette Memorial" at Lawrenceburg Speedway.

When the touring stars of BOSS rolled into Whitewater Valley on Friday night, it was the first time a large sprint car show had been at the facility in many years. A great field of 35 cars were on hand, much to the delight of the overflow crowd which was reportedly the largest in nearly 20 years at the track. Preliminary heats were won by Brandon Spithaler, Chase Briscoe, Jarrett Andretti, Logan Hupp, and Kevin Thomas Jr. The twin consolation races were taken by Dustin Smith and Joe Liguori.
In heat race #4, Aaron Middaugh and Dallas Hewitt got together exiting turn 4, sending Middaugh into a wild series of flips down the frontstretch. Middaugh climbed out only shaken, but not seriously injured.

The 25 lap A-Main found BOSS regular Mike Miller on the pole with Kentucky driver Aric Gentry alongside. Logan Hupp and Jarrett Andretti made up row 2. At the drop of the green flag, it was the "Magic Man" Mike Miller who blasted to the early lead with Hupp in tow. Fans were on the edge of their seats however as Kevin Thomas Jr had started from the 7th spot and was clearly the man on the move.

Miller led through lap 6, but Hupp was able to wrestle the lead away to lead laps 7-10. Thomas made his way to the runner-up slot by lap 8 and had his sights set on the lead. Working lap 11, Thomas made his first bid for the lead and officially led the lap. However, a determined Logan Hupp battled back to regain the lead a lap later. What ensued from that point will go down in Whitewater Valley history as one of the most epic battles in track history as the pair traded slide jobs on the tight bullring, even through heavy traffic. In the end, "Lightning" Logan Hupp struck the hardest in picking up his second career BOSS win in the Marshall Motorsports #2m owned by Ray Marshall out of Forest, Ohio. Thomas held on for second with Mike Miller, Jarrett Andretti and Garrett Abrams rounding out the top 5.

The next night the series moved on to Lawrenceburg Speedway for an emotional night in honoring an original BOSS racer, in the 1st annual "Jason Soudrette Memorial". Another fine field was on hand, this time 36 cars strong, to honor the memory of the #44 driver who competed in the very first BOSS events in 2011.

Preliminary heats were won by Shawn Westerfeld, Michael Fischesser, Joe Liguori and C.J. Leary. The twin consolation events were taken by Garrett Abrams and Mike Miller. During heat race #3, a scary incident occurred when Landon Simon flipped in turn 1-2 completely destroying his car, but thankfully he escaped uninjured.

The main event was brought to green by C.J Leary and Brandon Spithaler. Leary wasted no time in establishing a dominant early lead, but Joss Moffatt appeared to be the fastest car on the track as he advanced from 6th starting spot to run 2nd by lap 4. The race's first caution flew on lap 6 when Adam Miller spun to a stop in turn 2.

On the restart, Leary was able to put a small gap between himself and Moffatt leaving Brandon Spithaler and Shawn Westerfeld in a fierce battle for 3rd. Behind that pair, a trio of other drivers were waging a titanic battle of their own as Jarrett Andretti, Joe Liguori and Logan Hupp ran inches apart on the high speed palace of Lawrenceburg Speedway.

The second caution flew on lap 10 when Garrett Abrams, Matt Goodnight and Tony Main all came to rest in a minor incident in turn 4. The 3rd caution came on lap 14 when Adam Miller spun again, ending his night.

With 11 laps remaining, Leary and Moffatt had established themselves as the pair who would settle the score and both were looking for their second career BOSS win at Lawrenceburg. Working lap #22, Moffatt appeared to have momentum and was setting up for a great lead battle when the race's final caution flew for T.J. Heil on the backstretch. Later Moffatt would say the caution was what he did not need.

The final 3 laps were victory laps for C.J. Leary of Greenfield, Indiana as Moffat held on for second. Jarrett Andretti prevailed in the war for the final podium spot and also was the Hard Charger of the night advancing 8 spots from his 11th starting position. Brandon Spithaler and Shawn Westerfeld rounded out the top 5. The rest of the top 10 were Logan Hupp, Michael Fischesser, Justin Owen, Dustin Smith and Drew Abel.

Next up for the BOSS series, they will travel to Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio Saturday, August 16th
for a makeup race from the July 26th rain out. Updated point standings will be released on Monday.

We were able to hit both shows this weekend and again were provided with quality entertainment at both facilities. Obviously the BOSS series and Aaron have hit upon some magic as car owners and drivers are turning out in good numbers to participate with the series. The grandstand count was great as well for both shows this weekend. The close racing action has pulled in fans from all over. Keep up the good work Aaron and we hope to be able to see BOSS a few more times this season.

Also I would like to note that the new promoter at Whitewater Valley Speedway is making some headway. I always considered this place a diamond in the rough but the fans were really excited with the show BOSS put on Friday night. I realize that they still have a lot of work to do but just wanted to mention this facility and the improvements that I have seen since we were there the last time. Maybe 2015 will bring a few more sprint car shows.

Thanks Aaron and Damien for the rundown and updates. I hope everyone had fun and saw great events. I have no problem endorsing this series. Its a series that the promoter gets out and promotes. Tries to make affordable to run, Pays in heats and several contingencies and has a lot of racers many don't see often and racers I enjoy watching because they may not have top equipment but you see how good they are coming through the fields. Dustin Smith, Spithaler, Middaugh, Wisons, Ligori, Adam Miller, Mike Miller, Beabers, Fischesser and a host of guys who run it when they can. A few father/son racing teams racing together

Its a series thats taking NW racing to new markets or markets abandoned. Boosting existing markets, when and if its needed. A series you don't have to fear dominating the locals even though several are past Champions and awesome racers. A series that tries to give a racer every opportunity to make the main on their abilities.

I had half a dozen people tell me on FB that the fans at Union County were eating it up, Were fired up and loving every minute of it. Of course this ripped my heart as There was no place I'd of rather been

Like I said the promoter promotes, The tracks, The series, The drivers running with him, Heard and seen in print him saying great things about the people racing with him. Trying to make it fun and promoting the racers, Using Surnames/nicknames, Magic Man, Lightning etc.

I hope this continues to grow and thrive, How cool would it be to see OH NW Sprintweek? And Id do it Mid August if it was me.

If I'd change anything, It'd be possibly hotlap qualify and race against your own heat group. Top Six inverted Slowest to the tail, Take 3-4 based on number of heats.

Again, Hope everyone had fun and again, Thanks for all the updates, rundowns etc.
Chuck
