USAC STAT BOOK: SILVER CROWN - 8/27/2019

Du Quoin, Illinois (August 27, 2019)………The Magic Mile of the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds welcomes the USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series back to its longest-tenured racing event, the “Ted Horn 100,” which first began in 1951 at the one-mile dirt oval in southern Illinois, this Sunday, September 1.

It’s been since June the last time the series was on dirt, at Williams Grove, a race won by Brady Bacon (Broken Arrow, Okla.) on the final lap. In fact, both dirt races have featured a pass for the lead with eight or less laps remaining. Tyler Courtney (Indianapolis, Ind.) passed Kevin Thomas, Jr. (Cullman, Ala.) with eight laps to go in May's Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Kody Swanson (Kingsburg, Calif.), a two-time Ted Horn 100 winner, leads the standings following two consecutive victories, both on the pavement of Oregon, Wisc. and Salem, Ind., and a series-leading four overall in the Nolen Racing No. 20.

Swanson leads the series in top-five finishes with six. He shares the lead in top-ten finishes alongside David Byrne (Shullsburg, Wisc.) and Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.) and has led 206 more laps than his closest competitor this year, 304 total.

Pits and registration open at 1pm, grandstands open at 4pm, practice at 5pm, qualifying at 6:30 with the Ted Horn 100 scheduled for an 8:15pm start. All times central.

Tickets will be available on raceday or by calling the Du Quoin Fair office at 618-542-1535. Info and tickets can also be obtained by calling the Track Enterprises office at 217-764-3200.

Advance tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children 11 and under. On the day of the race, adults are $30 and children 11 and under are $10. Pit passes are $35 apiece for adults and $20 for children 11 and under.

THORSON TABBED FOR DYSON’S RIDE AT Du QUOIN

Du Quoin, Illinois (August 28, 2019)………Tanner Thorson, the 2016 USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget champion, has been named the driver of the Chris Dyson Racing No. 9 for this Sunday’s USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series Ted Horn 100 at the Du Quoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds on September 1.

Thorson has made just one career start in his Silver Crown career, back in 2015 at Eldora Speedway’s 4-Crown Nationals. The drive came in a last-minute substitute role for Michael Dutcher Motorsports, starting 19th and finishing 17th.

Thorson does have previous experience at the one-mile dirt oval in Du Quoin, starting 3rd and finishing 17th in ARCA Stock Car start in 2017.

Dyson’s car has appeared in four Silver Crown events this season, all with team owner and driver Chris Dyson behind the wheel. Dyson finished a best of 9th in the opener on the pavement at Memphis in March. He was also 19th on the dirt mile at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May after riding out a wild turn two accident late in the 100-miler. One year ago at Du Quoin, the CDR No. 9 charged from 26th to 13th with Dyson in the seat.

Dyson, a two time American Le Mans Series titlist who sits second in the Trans Am Series standings with two victories, is unable to compete at Du Quoin due to a racing conflict. Dyson maintains his support of the USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series by entering his car in as many races as possible this season even when not driving himself.

Thorson, of Minden, Nev., has made his name with USAC in the midget division where he owns 13 career NOS Energy Drink National Midget feature wins including the Turkey Night Grand Prix in 2015 and the Gold Crown Nationals in back-to-back years in 2015-16.

The latest of his USAC Midget victories came in spectacular fashion this past June during Indiana Midget Week at Lincoln Park Speedway where he charged from 15th to 1st to grab the win. The triumph came just three months following a serious multi-car highway accident in California that left him with a broken left arm and right foot, a cracked sternum, broken ribs and a punctured lung.

Pits and registration open at 1pm, grandstands open at 4pm, practice at 5pm, qualifying at 6:30 with the Ted Horn 100 scheduled for an 8:15pm start. All times central.

TED HORN 100 ENTRY LIST REVEALED

Du Quoin, Illinois (August 28, 2019)………Eight past Ted Horn 100 winners are among the 37 drivers prepared for action in this Sunday’s USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series race at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds in southern Illinois.

Chris Windom (Canton, Ill.) has captured two of the last three Ted Horn 100 victories, both of which he assumed the lead late in the race, just six laps from the end in 2018 and with three to go during the 2016 classic en route to a championship season.

USAC Silver Crown point leader Kody Swanson (Kingsburg, Calif.) owns a pair of Ted Horn 100 victories. He took the first of his record 28 series wins at Du Quoin in 2010 and raced to victory again in 2017. His team, Nolen Racing, has collected two Du Quoin victories, first with Johnny Parsons in 1992 and in 1999 with Tony Elliott.

Shane Cockrum, from nearby Benton, Ill., is one of two drivers to win back-to-back Champ Car races at Du Quoin and is the most recent to do so back in 2014 and 2015. He’s finished in the top-five for six consecutive years at Du Quoin and Sunday’s race marks the final event for the Hardy Boys Motorsports team at the Magic Mile, the team with whom Cockrum scored both victories.

Chris Urish (Elkhart, Ill.) stunned the field with a victory in the 2013 Ted Horn 100, going to the lead after running in the third position with just four laps remaining to score his first career victory.

Brian Tyler (Mt. Pleasant, N.C.) has been a master of the one-mile dirt ovals in the Land of Lincoln, winning four times at Springfield and once, in 2008, at Du Quoin. He will wheel the Galas Motorsports No. 12, which has direct connections to Delrose/Holt Racing’s six Silver Crown victories at Du Quoin with drivers Gary Bettenhausen and Jeff Swindell.

Swindell (Germantown, Tenn.) won for Delrose/Holt in the 1990 race at Du Quoin. Nearly three decades later, he remains a threat to win. In both 2016 and 2017, Swindell led the most laps. He was in control for 55 laps in 2016, finishing 2nd after being passed for the lead with just three laps to go. In 2017, he led 68, finishing 3rd after leading until 10 laps remaining.

The very first of Peru, Indiana native Russ Gamester’s six Silver Crown wins came at Du Quoin in 1997 where the 1989 USAC National Midget champion took over the lead with just 14 laps remaining to score the breakthrough victory.

Shane Cottle (Kansas, Ill.) was dominant in his 2007 Du Quoin victory, leading all 100 laps from the pole position en route to his first career series victory. He again won the pole for the event the following year in 2008.

Past Silver Crown Series winners on the hunt for a first Du Quoin triumph include C.J. Leary (Greenfield, Ind.), who has led the race in each of the past two years, including a race-high 53 laps one year ago. He’s joined by David Byrne (Shullsburg, Wisc.), John Heydenreich (Bloomsburg, Pa.), 2017 Springfield Mile winner Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.), May’s Hoosier Hundred winner Tyler Courtney (Indianapolis, Ind.) and two-time Springfield winner A.J. Fike (Galesburg, Ill.).

Nine different Illinois drivers have won at Du Quoin, including Tinley Park’s Tony Bettenhausen (1949 & twice in 1951), Rantoul’s Don Branson (1965), Danville’s Bubby Jones (1976), Tinley Park’s Gary Bettenhausen (twice in 1980, 1982, 1983 & 1988), Chicago’s Rich Vogler (1981), Kansas’ Shane Cottle (2007), Elkhart’s Chris Urish (2013), Benton’s Shane Cockrum (2014 & 2015) and Canton’s Chris Windom (2016 & 2018).

Eight Illinoisans are set for combat Sunday at Du Quoin with the four past Ted Horn 100 winners Cottle, Urish, Cockrum and Windom joining Fike, Patrick Lawson (Edwardsville, Ill.), Terry Babb (Decatur, Ill.) and Korey Weyant (Springfield, Ill.)

Two past USAC National champions in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Brady Bacon (2014 & 16 Sprint) and Minden, Nevada’s Tanner Thorson (2016 Midget) are entered. Bacon, a Williams Grove winner in June, led 28 laps a year ago at Du Quoin while Thorson is set to make his second Silver Crown start, and first at Du Quoin. Six-time All Star Circuit of Champions titlist Chad Kemenah (Alvada, Ohio) is ready to make his Du Quoin debut.

Jacob Wilson (Crawfordsville, Ind.) won the pole for last year’s race while Kevin Thomas, Jr. (Cullman, Ala.) took the runner-up spot in the main event behind Windom and brings a streak of four-straight 2nd place finishes on dirt in Silver Crown competition into Du Quoin.

They are joined by fellow Silver Crown veterans Kyle Steffens (St. Louis, Mo.), Kyle Robbins (New Castle, Ind.), Austin Nemire (Sylvania, Ohio), Mike Haggenbottom (Levittown, Pa.), Matt Goodnight (Winchester, Ind.), Danny Long (Bonne Terre, Mo.), Steve Buckwalter (Royersford, Pa.), Casey Shuman (Tempe, Ariz.) and Chris Fetter (Troy, Mo.).

Robbins (2018) and Shuman (2016) are past series Silver Crown Rookies of the Year, joined by this year’s crop of series rookies heading to Du Quoin, including Dave Berkheimer (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), Ronnie Wuerdeman (Cincinnati, Ohio), Austin Mundie (Dallas, Texas), Dallas Hewitt (Troy, Ohio), Casey Buckman (Chandler, Ariz.) and Jimmy Light (West Springfield, Pa.). While a series Rookie, Mundie isn’t a first-time to Du Quoin, finishing 24th in 2018.

“Sunshine” Looking for DuQuoin Redemption

DuQuoin, IL-(August 29, 2019)-There are times race fans may have heard a driver remark “this place owes me one” but the sentiment is often hard to justify. The young pilot who is arguably the hottest driver in United States Auto Club competition at the present time might just feel that way about the two dirt miles in the state of Illinois given the 2018 results. Tyler “Sunshine” Courtney of Indianapolis looked like a winner during the races at Springfield and DuQuoin last year but could not find victory lane. He returns this year with a shot at victories on both tracks and a chance to be the final driver to register a historic “triple crown”.

Courtney is a threat to win in all three of USAC’s prime divisions, the Midget series, Sprint Car series and the Silver Crown division. Courtney ran his first race in the big cars a few seasons ago taking over a seat occupied by veteran Tom Capie, eventually moving to a car owned by long time midget car owner Hans Lein of Wisconsin. Courtney and Lein have formed a winning combination, Courtney won his first Silver Crown race in September of 2017 at Eldora and led both at Springfield and DuQuoin in the black machine. The race at DuQuoin may have been the most heartbreaking as Courtney took over the lead from C.J. Leary with 13 miles to go after Leary began to run short on fuel. The same fate befell Courtney within 7 laps as his engine began to sputter and he was forced to the pits on lap 96.

Courtney comes back to the Magic Mile as one of the favorites to win the 71st Ted Horn 100 and a shot at becoming perhaps the last driver on a very exclusive list. Since 1953 just 14 drivers have won 100-mile championship races on the three Midwestern fairground mile race tracks, Indianapolis, Springfield and DuQuoin. With the announcement earlier that the Indiana State Fair was turning the “Track of Champions” into a practice facility for horses, it is possible that no one will be able to claim a victory on all three again. Further, just four men, Jimmy Bryan, A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Jack Hewitt won all three (Bettenhausen (Springfield) 100, Ted Horn 100, Hoosier Hundred) in the same year.

Courtney won this year’s Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in the same fashion as Chris Windom did at Springfield and DuQuoin in 2018. Courtney started 3rd and bided his time taking the lead from Kevin Thomas Jr. with less than 10 miles to go. His quest for the USAC Silver Crown “triple crown” continues Sunday night in the 71st Ted Horn 100. Practice for the big cars begins at 5 p.m. with the 100-miler beginning around 8.

Youngest DuQuoin Winner Returns Searching for Horn 100 Victory

DuQuoin, IL-(August 29, 2019)-In the year 2000 the Magic Mile at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds had just been remodeled with a new concrete wall and lighting system. The ARCA stock car race was still held on Sunday afternoon, with the Ted Horn 100 USAC Silver Crown event on Monday afternoon. The UMP Modified Bill Oldani Memorial was in year seven and a fresh faced teenager from St. Charles, Missouri was in the mix in the Oldani field and an interested spectator for the Ted Horn 100. That teenager would become the youngest winner ever on the Magic Mile and he returns this weekend in search of Silver Crown success in Sunday’s Ted Horn 100.

It is hard to realize that Kyle Steffens is now in his mid-thirties and a veteran of over 20 years of competition. In 2000, he was 16 years, 1 month and 5 days when he took the lead of the UMP Modified event on Monday afternoon and sailed to victory beating veterans Jeff Leka, Kevin Gundaker and Jeff Parks to the finish line. A joyous victory lane celebration followed which included a bear hug to announcer Jim Childers that nearly lifted him off the ground.

The victory led Steffens to purchase his own Silver Crown car for 2001 but he missed the show in qualifying and the semi. Steffens returned in 2002 and just missed the show again. In 2005 Steffens was able to secure a ride in the seat of the famous orange and while number 12 Silver Crown championship dirt car fielded by O’Fallon, Illinois car owner and crew chief Bob Galas. The seat had been occupied by luminaries such as Jim Hurtubise, Chuck Gurney, Gary Bettenhausen, Jeff Swindell and Kevin Thomas, all winners of 100-mile dirt track championship races at some point in their careers. Steffens finally made the field finishing 26th. He tried again in 2007 for owner Chuck Hartenstein but was unable to qualify.

Since 2001 Kyle Steffens has made sporadic appearances in the Silver Crown series while driving late models and modifieds on area short tracks. He has always had an eye on the Silver Crown series and this year returns to the series and DuQuoin with a new car and a new paint scheme hoping to repeat the success found in 2000 at DuQuoin. If Steffens were able to win the Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin he would become the first driver ever to lay claim to victory in the Silver Crown and Modified events on the Magic Mile. It is almost certain a wild victory lane celebration would follow that might include a dip in the infield lake.

Kyle Steffens and 37 other competitors roll into the Magic Mile on Sunday. Practice for the 71st Ted Horn 100 begins at 5 p.m. with the 100-miler taking the green flag around 8 p.m.
