FORT WAYNE, IN (Nov. 16) – Problem solved. When the harsh Midwestern winters put a halt to the outdoor racing season, Fort Wayne’s massive Allen County War Memorial Coliseum comes to the rescue with the annual Rumble in Fort Wayne. For the 18th consecutive year, a racy 1/6 mile oval will be constructed within the confines of the Coliseum’s Expo Center over the weekend of December 26 and 27. The unusual combination of Coke syrup over concrete will provide the tacky multi-grooved racing surface for the same divisions of racing that grace the outdoor ovals through the summer months.

Included in the menu of activity will be the Midget division which uses a unique formula to bring together National, Regional, Focus and Kenyon type cars into one class. This class can be seen at such famed ovals as Eldora Speedway and Lucas Oil Raceway Park and locally at Plymouth Speedway.

Joining the Midgets will be two classes of 600cc powered Midgets that can be seen locally at US 24 and Miami County Speedways. An ‘outlaw’ class that sees the body design rules opened up and aerodynamic wings used will join the more traditional non-winged style machines as the double 600cc offering.

Completing the active card will be multiple divisions of Go-Kart and Quarter Midget racing. Both of these classes have been the launching pad for many of today’s superstars in racing including mutli-time Rumble winner Tony Stewart, along with NASCAR’s retiring superstar Jeff Gordon and NASCAR’s Danica Patrick.

It will be ‘business as normal’ for the race teams and fans. The conventional format of practice laps, followed by qualifying time trials (Midgets, 600’s) will precede a full slate of eliminating heat races and last-chance consolation races prior to the featured main events. Saturday (Dec. 26) will see a full-day of racing, with the Karts and Quarter Midgets completing their preliminary action during the afternoon while the Midgets and 600cc classes will do the bulk of their racing in the evening. Sunday (Dec. 27) will see a busy afternoon of racing that will be modified somewhat to get the fans and teams back on the road as quickly as possible.

I always enjoy this show. It is the only place where I see the people in the support classes move into sprints and midgets.
