Bilbee Blasts To BOSS Win At The Burg

A great field of 37 traditional sprint cars filled the pit area at Lawrenceburg Speedway Saturday night. Indianapolis, Indiana driver Nick Bilbee was able to find a way around race long leader, Scotty Weir. Bilbee was thrilled with the win, despite what appeared to be an ailing engine about 500 feet past the finish line.

Fast qualifiers in the four heat race groups were Travis Hery, Dustin Ingle, Braxton Cummings and 2 time BOSS champion Shawn Westerfeld. Heat race #1 was taken by defending tour champion, Bill Rose over Landon Simon. Scotty Weir claimed heat race #2 over Bilbee. Heat 3 was a convincing win for Michael Fischesser with 2018 BOSS runner-up, Ty Tilton, knifing his way from 5th to 2nd to make the redraw and take home the All Star Performance "Sweet Move" award. The 4th and final heat was won by Joss Moffatt over Westerfeld.

A pair of twin 10 lap B-Main's were held with the top 3 advancing to the main event. The first B-Main was taken by Thomas Meseraull, who had to start from the tail. Dustin Webber and Travis Hery also transferred. B-Main #2 was won by Justin Owen over Matt Westfall and Pat Giddens.

The 25 lap main event was paced to green by Landon Simon with Weir alongside. Bilbee and Bill Rose started from row 2 with Fischesser and Tilton in row 3. Weir immediately went to the lead in the Scott Pederson 4P, but the Soudrette 44 of Dickie Gaines did not accelerate on the start, causing a logjam. Several cars made contact, with the 71 of Braxton Cummings getting the worst of it. All cars continued for a lap, until Joss Moffatt spun in turn 4, collecting Matt Westfall in the Marshall Motorsports 33M, sending Westfall up and over. During the red flag, Cummings climbed from the cockpit of his racer, understandably concerned about damage. However, track rules prohibit drivers from unbuckling during an event, and he was disqualified. He did get the "Hard Luck" award for getting caught up in the original incident.

Back under green, Weir looked unstoppable. But Nick Bilbee was searching and moving around the race track looking for a faster line. Another red flag would fly when Dustin Ingle caught the infield berm and tire marker in turn 4, sending him on his lid. He was okay, but done for the night.

With a long green flag run ensuing, Bilbee's search paid off and he found the momentum to get by Weir and the duo ran that way to the checkered flag with Bill Rose closing in the final laps, and completing the podium. Ty Tilton and Shawn Westerfeld completed the top 5 finishers. 2014 BOSS titlist, Mike Miller, had a solid run to finish 6th while Dallas Hewitt, Michael Fischesser, Pat Giddens and J.J. Hughes rounded out the top 10. Giddens won the Bridge Restaurant "Hard Charger" award.

Next up for the BOSS tour is the first ever visit to Oakshade Raceway on Saturday, June 1st. Oakshade was built with sprint cars in mind in the 1970's, but the track has not held a sprint show of any kind in over 15 years! Drivers and fans alike have been waiting for this one since its announcement in the winter.
