I believe Gary Bettenhausen nailed it with his perspective on the sport of sprint car racing. Back in the early 80's, there was a USAC race at Terre Haute being televised on ABC. The winged sprints (WOO) were just beginning to emerge and there was a debate about how much safer they were with the wings. GaryB was being interviewed by Chris E on the subject. He told Chris "When they make these things so safe that those people up there (pointing to the stands) can come down here and do what I do, I quit".
