Windom Has Broom for USAC Illinois Sweep

August 21, 2018-(DuQuoin, IL)-Chris Windom of Canton, Illinois has the proverbial broom ready as he tries for the “Illinois Sweep” in the USAC Silver Crown Series as the big cars make their way to DuQuoin for the annual Ted Horn 100. The 2016 Silver Crown champion led the final 9 miles of the Bettenhausen 100 at Springfield and joined Don Branson and A.J. Fike as the only drivers from central Illinois to win a Bettenhausen 100. Windom, who won at DuQuoin in his championship season, could become the 15th man in 70 years to sweep the championship races at Springfield and DuQuoin.

At Springfield Windom started 13th and made his way toward the front of the field eventually biding his time and riding behind leaders Tyler Courtney, Kevin Thomas Jr. and defending race winner Justin Grant for the better part of 90 miles. On lap 92 Windom sailed into the lead and began pulling away from Thomas Jr. en route to his first Bettenhausen victory. In doing so he stopped the 5-race win streak of USAC point leader Kody Swanson and gave car owner Gene Nolen his first win on the Springfield mile. Nolen joins a list that includes Al Dean, Vel Miletich and Parnelli Jones, A.J. Foyt, Bob Bowes, Bob Wilkie, Ray (Junior) Kurtz, Bob Hampshire, Ralph Depalma and Bob East of entrants who fielded winning cars on all three dirt miles.

Windom told the crowd in the Springfield post-race interview that he knew “the car was good enough to win the whole race.” I’ve run enough of these races now and the pace they were running, wasn’t going to be the pace I could run the last ten laps.” “I just saved the car; the cautions came out like we needed and it worked out in our favor.” With the victory Windom became the seventh driver from Illinois to win a championship race at Springfield since the first event in 1934. Others in addition to Branson and Fike were Tony and Gary Bettenhausen, Emil Andres and Paul Russo.

At DuQuoin Windom will be trying for the 23rd Illinois mile sweep since the DuQuoin “Magic Mile” joined the national championship lineup in 1948. Tony Bettenhausen first turned the trick in 1951, A.J. Foyt, Jack Hewitt and Chuck Gurney each pulled off the sweep three times, Jimmy Bryan and Mario Andretti did so twice. The last driver to sweep the Illinois dirt miles was Brian Tyler in 2008.

Windom’s experience at DuQuoin should make him one of the favorites coming into the Ted Horn 100. He led 17 laps in 2013 before running out of fuel and finishing 6th. In 2014 he led 3 laps before an accident ended his night 11 miles from the finish. A second in 2015 was followed by 30 leading laps and victory in 2016. Last year Windom qualified fourth and ran strong until ignition woes sidelined him on lap 80. Owner Gene Nolen has positive experience at DuQuoin as well. Johnny Parsons won in the Nolen V-6 in 1992 setting a 100-mile track record that still stands. The late Tony Elliot won driving for Nolen in 1999. Parsons also won the pole for Nolen in 1992.

Practice for the Ted Horn 100 and the Silver Crown machines begins on the Magic Mile at 5 p.m. Sunday, September 3. Qualifications are set for approximately 6:30 with the start of the annual Ted Horn 100 slated for 8 p.m.

TED HORN 100 Du QUOIN SILVER CROWN ENTRY LIST RELEASED

Du Quoin, Illinois………The entry list for Sunday’s USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series’ “Ted Horn 100” at the one-mile Du Quoin State Fairgrounds dirt oval has been released with 41 cars filling up the sheet!

Pits and registration open at 1pm on raceday, Sunday, September 2. The ticket office and grandstands open at 4pm. Silver Crown practice runs from 5pm to 6:10pm. Qualifying is set for 6:30pm. The Qualifying race is scheduled for 7:15pm. Pre-race ceremonies begin at 7:45pm with the 100-mile “Ted Horn 100” green flag set for 8:15pm.

Advance adult tickets are $25. Advanced children 11 and under are $10. On the day of the race, adult are $30. Children 11 and under are $10. Adult pit passes are $35 apiece. Pit passes for children 11 and under are $20.

Racing in Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin is “Relative”

August 27, 2018-DuQuoin, Il-Sons, grandsons, nephews, great nephews, the family relationships of Ted Horn 100 competitors at the DuQuoin State Fair continues a tradition of passing the torch to a new generation or competing against family on the “Magic Mile” dirt oval. In 2018 there are no less than nine entered drivers on the USAC Silver Crown entry list for the Ted Horn 100 who have a family member that ran one form of race car on the DuQuoin oval. It is a “family tradition” that dates back to the 1950’s.

Grizzled veteran Paul Russo of Chicago had a career that began before World War II when he finished last in the first DuQuoin race in 1948. His best finish, second, came a month later in the race that took the life of Ted Horn. Five years later he got to compete against nephew Eddie in the 1953 Ted Horn 100, with uncle Paul finishing 14th and Eddie finishing 15th. In 1959, Dick Rathmann joined brother Jim as siblings who made the Horn 100, but Jim and Dick never competed against each other at DuQuoin.

Family relationships blossomed during the 1960’s. Jerry Unser won a stock car event at DuQuoin in 1957 and missed the Horn 100 the next day. Younger brother Bobby finished 4th in his rookie year of 1964, three years later baby brother Al joined Bobby in the starting lineup. In 1967 the first son followed his father into the Horn 100 field, son Billy finished 5th in 1967 while father Bill had a 3rd in 1952. One year later it was son Gary following in father Tony’s footsteps. In 1980 Gary joined Tony as father and son winners of the Ted Horn 100.

During the 1970’s half-brothers Pancho Carter and Johnny Parsons competed against each other at the Magic Mile and both would eventually win the Ted Horn 100. Both sons followed their famous fathers Duane and Johnnie into the Horn 100 starting lineup. The decade also saw brothers Steve and Larry Cannon suit up and run on the DuQuoin clay.

Other combinations followed in the next four decades. Bill and son Billy Puterbaugh, Mike and son Mike Mosely Jr., Billy Vukovich III joining father and grandfather, 2003 winner Richie Tobias eclipsing father Dick “Toby” Tobias, Jeff Swindell joined Sammy on the list of brothers in the Horn 100 as did the Fike brothers in 2003.

Family ties to racing at DuQuoin are never more evident than in 2018. For example, Springfield’s Korey Weyant joins great uncle Chuck on the list of Horn 100 drivers, Chuck’s first start came in 1952. Joey Moughan’s uncle Jim ran Silver Crown cars at DuQuoin while Joe Ligouri’s grandfather Ralphs first start came in 1957. Jackie Burke joins fellow Texan Ronnie as members of the Burke family at DuQuoin and C.J. Leary follows in the footsteps of father Chuck. Austin Nemire’s grandfather Jerry had 14 starts in the Horn 100 and stock car starts on the mile as well. Even two-time winner Shane Cockrum of Benton has a connection, father Cliff ran supermodifieds on the DuQuoin mile in the early 70’s.

Relativity will be on display again Sunday night in the Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin. It’s all part of the holiday doubleheader weekend of racing, featuring USAC Silver Crown on Sunday night, September 2 and the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards on Monday, September 3. The DIRTcar Modifieds will race prelims on Sunday and their feature on Monday. Tony Stewart and Ken Schrader will battle with the other strong Modified competitors in the Bill Oldani event.

Ted Horn 100 Track Facts

August 29, 2018-DuQuoin, Il-Some fun facts as we approach Sunday night’s Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin.

• A 41 car entry list, the largest since 2006.

• With 41 cars we could see the first “suitcase race” since September 3, 2006.

• The record for entries is 63 in 1996, the record for cars on the grounds is 58, also in 1996.

• Dave Darland could make a series record 200th USAC Silver Crown start at DuQuoin. Ironically, the Magic Mile remains the only mile he has yet to conquer.

• Last year saw a record 24 cars listed as running at the finish.

• The Horn 100 has averaged 3 cautions and 1 red flag per event since 1970.

• In the last 6 races the Horn 100 winner has started in the top 10 including twice from 9th and twice from 5th.

• In the last six races the pole winner has finished in the top 10 in all 6 races but never won.

• Jackie Burke is the oldest Horn 100 starter at 70 in 2016. Austin Nemire is the youngest at 16 in 2015. Both are entered this year.

• Cars carrying the number 2 have the most DuQuoin wins, 7.

• The one lap track record was broken 11 times between 1957 and 1992, and 4 times between 1992 and 2004.

• Since 1996, a car going out 20th or later in the qualifying order has set fast time 10 times.

• Since 1996, the last car in the qualifying order has made the top 20 no less than 16 times.

• Since 1996, a qualifier has posted his official (fastest lap in two lap runs) on the second lap an average of 25 times.

• The hottest race day for a daytime Horn 100 was 100 degrees in 1954.

• The coolest Horn 100 for a night event (since 2003) was 64 degrees in 2003.

• Four times the Horn 100 has been canceled due to rain, 1950, 1962, 2009 and 2012. Two other times (1994 & 2003) it was postponed. 2012 remains the only year the entire race weekend was washed out.
