Waynesfield Raceway Park hosted the 1st Annual Jack Hewitt Classic non-wing sprint car race on 8/15/09. 45 of the country's best sprint cars showed up with the drivers who all wanted to win the 1st Hewitt Classic. A large crowd was on hand to see the sprint cars along with mini-sprints, tuff trucks, and compacts.
The 600cc mini-sprints were the 1st racing class to run the Waynesfield high banks. Hot Rod Henning would grab the lead during the feature and lead every lap to dominate this race. This was Henning's 3rd mini-sprint feature win this season at Waynesfield. Mikey Helterbran finished 2nd with Garry Loney in 3rd. The mini-sprint heats were won by Garry Loney and Devon Dobie.
The large amount of sprint cars required the track to run 4 heat races and 2 b-mains to narrow the field down to the fastest 20 cars to line up the Hewitt Classic. Blake Fitzpatrick, Brady Short, Jon Stanbrough, and Thomas Messeraul all earned heat race wins while Kyle Simon and Joss Maffet won the 2 b-mains. When the green flag waved to start the Hewitt Classic, Kevin Thomas Jr raced into the lead. Thomas was only able to hold that lead for a few laps until Matt Westfall worked his way to the point. Westfall was able to stretch his lead out to about 6 carlengths ahead of the rest of the field. While Westfall was working his way through lapped traffic, a big war was brewing behind him. Jon Stanbrough and Brady Short were on the move. Just as flagman Jeremy Vogel was giving the drivers the 5 laps to go sign, he threw the yellow flag do to a car spinning to a stop on the track. This would set up a 5 lap shootout between Westfall, Stanbrough, and Short. Westfall was able to hold the lead at the restart. As the white flag was shown to the leaders, Stanbrough would attempt the classic slide job on Westfall in turns 1 & 2. Stanbrough was able to slide past Westfall but his momentum caused his car to slide too far up the track. Westfall kept his cool and drove right back into the lead and on to the win. Matt Westfall would go into the record books as being the winner of the 1st Annual Jack Hewitt Classic. Jack Hewitt was in victory lane to congradulate Westfall and told the crowd how he has known Westfall since Matt was just a kid. Stanbrough finished 2nd with Short finishing in 3rd.
Tom Stauffer and Bill Keeler would lead the tuff trucks to start their feature event. Stauffer would grab the lead for the 1st few laps of the race but the truck on the move was Tim Dick's. Dick would work his way towards the front and soon take the lead in the truck feature. Once in the front position, Dick would go unchallenged the rest of the race. Tim Dick was the tuff truck winner followed by Gabe Twining and Bill Keeler. Gabe Twining, Chris Hicks, and Jessica Nuss were the tuff truck heat winners.
The front wheel drive compacts were the final race to take to the track. Since Jeff Kimes has won all 3 compact races this season, he was required to start the race from the tail of the field. David Yoder and Justin Durflinger would battle for the front position during the 1st half of the race. Durflinger would finally take control at the point but all eyes were on Jeff Kimes as he charged through the pack towards the front. Kimes would catch Durflinger with just 2 laps to go in the race. Kimes drove to the inside of Durflinger in each corner but Durflinger would slam the door and hold on to the lead. As Kimes tried the inside on the last lap, Durflinger left an opening so Kimes took it. Jeff Kimes only led one half lap of the race but that is the lap that pays the $$. Kimes would be followed across the finish line by Durflinger and David Yoder. Jordan Flynn and Kimes won the compact heats.
Saturday August 22nd will be DARF night at Waynesfield Raceway Park. 360 Wing Sprint Cars, Non-Wing Sprints, Mini-Sprints, Tuff Trucks, and Compacts will all be competing for the wins. Gates open at 4:00pm with the racing starting at 7:00pm. Go to www.waynesfieldmotorsportspark.com for more info.
