1968 USAC MIDGET REVIEW: MEL IS MIRACULOUS ONCE MORE

Miraculous Mel Kenyon won 11 features during the 1968 season and, although this fell short of the record 17 he racked up in 1967, it was more than adequate to win the USAC National Midget Championship for the second straight year.* In addition to his victories, Kenyon’s third career series title also included 14 seconds and he was third 10 times for a total of 35 times in the top-three.* He started in 59 features, which was more than any other driver for the year.

Kenyon started out the 1968 Midget campaign the same way he ended 1967, as a winner, doing so in the first event of the year, a 50-lapper at the tight 1/10th mile indoor track at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Similarly, Kenyon took over the point lead in April and never relinquished it, defeating Mike McGreevy for the second straight year, a season in which Kenyon also became the first driver to win the opening race and the championship within the same year.* Similarly, Kenyon also became the first reigning champ to win the season opener.

The midget division rules subcommittee, meeting under the chairmanship of Gene Shannon, adopted two rule changes that were presented to the full meeting of the rules committee and then passed to the Board of Directors for final action. *Attending the meeting were Henry Banks, director of competition, Bob Stroud, division supervisor, Gene Shannon, chairman, Les Scott, Howard Linne, Mel Kenyon, Bill Mehner, Lee Elkins, Curly Rahn, Lou Cooper and Donald Davidson.

One rule change affected the look of the midgets, which were now permitted to use either an 8x12 or 8x13-inch wheel, making for better adhesion, better handling and considerably improved tire wear, adding up to greater safety.

The second rule change proposal increased the maximum cubic inch displacement of stock block engines from 150 to 155 inches and raise that of the Offenhauser from 110 to 114 cubic inches.

It was the feeling of the committee that use of the wider wheel would give a new look to the midgets and better their performance.* Several speed records subsequently fell as a result of the change.* Furthermore, a substantial demand for the product created quite a large backup of orders for the wheel manufacturing companies, forcing Ted Halibrand, head of Halibrand Engineering, to make a flying trip to Indianapolis to purchase two new Lodge & Shipley automatic lathes.

“We've taken too much time to turn out the new wheels,” said Halibrand. “These new lathes will step up production.”

Future USAC National Midget champion Tom Bigelow reached victory lane with the series for the first time in 1968, darting from the 14th spot to win a June race in his home state of Wisconsin at Hales Corners Speedway.* Sammy Sessions, who’d notch the 1972 USAC National Sprint Car crown, won his first USAC Midget feature in August at Michigan’s Berlin Raceway, then finished off the trail with a scintillating triumph at Turkey Night, the final TNGP event that was 150 laps in length.

In one of the major upsets of the 1968 season, Nigel (Paul) Bates, won the 50-lapper at California’s Cajon Speedway in the penultimate event of the season on November 23.* The British born San Jose, Calif. resident was driving a brand new Offy which he, himself, owned and which had just recently been constructed by fellow driver George Benson.

Even more remarkably for Bates, his first win came in what was his first ever USAC National Midget feature start, the third driver ever to pull off the feat.* In August of 1968, Lee Kunzman won at Davenport, Iowa’s Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in his USAC midget debut as did Frank Secrist in his first USAC attempt at Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway in 1966.

On June 30, Bob Wente won the Kokomo 50-lap feature and made it a very memorable occasion when he became the first driver to reach 50 career USAC National Midget feature wins.

Midget driver Rick Davidson became the latest member of the racing fraternity to learn to fly in 1968.* He soloed in March in a Piper Cherokee 180 after taking lessons from Chief Instructor Harry McQuinn, who himself was a famed midget racer, 10-time Indianapolis 500 qualifier and USAC National Championship division supervisor.

Tom Sellberg suffered career-ending injuries when his car flipped over four times during the August event at the Sterling (Ill.) Speed Bowl.* Sellberg scored two career USAC Midget victories, including a March race in April at Tucson, Ariz.

Greg Flatow, owner of the well-known black and yellow No. 52 midget which featured yellow wheels, died on October 25.* Flatow’s cars twice won the Du Quoin 100-mile midget event, in 1958 with Rodger Ward and in 1960 with Jack Turner.
