USAC Indiana Sprintweek Night #3½

37 cars

Nathan Moore shelled a driveshaft in hot laps and was done for the night. Shelby VanGilder also had issues and scratched for the night. Mitch Wissmiller (1st car out to time) was a surprise quick timer clocking in at 21.361 seconds on a dry track that gave way fast. Jerry Coons Jr. (28th car out) was second quick, followed by Jarett Andretti (4th), Dave Darland (32nd), Chad Boespflug (16th), Kevin Thomas Jr. (33rd), Justin Grant (20th), Aaron Farney (35th), Robert Ballou (27th) and Jon Stanbrough (14th).

Heat one (started): 1. Ballou 12 (4) 2. Hunter Schuerenberg 2E (1) 3. Boespflug 66 (5) 4. Landon Simon 24 (2) / 5. M. Wissmiller 1w (6) 6. Thomas Meseraull 39 (9) 7. Shane Cottle 17 (7) 8. Bill Rose 6 (3) 9. Casey Shuman 2x (8)

Schuerenberg led early over Simon and Boespflug in 8-lapper. Ballou was third by lap two, took second from Simon on lap four, and stalked the leader. While Boespflug snatched third from Simon on lap seven, Ballou shot a slider in turn three on the last lap to pass Schuerenberg for the heat win.

Heat two (started): 1. Chase Stockon 32 (2) 2. Stanbrough 81 (4) 3. Thomas Jr. 17RW (5) 4. Coons 10E (6) / 5. Brady Short 11P (3) 6. Lee Dakus 75 (1) 7. Jake Swanson 92 (7) 8. Chris Babcock 35 (8) 9. Robert Bell 71 (9)

Stockon led the distance and checked out. On lap three Stanbrough grabbed second from Dakus, while Coons moved by B. Short into the fourth and final transfer. Thomas shot by both B. Short and Coons on lap four to claim third.

Heat three (started): 1. Carson Short 21 (2) 2. Chris Windom 21x (4) 3. Grant 5 (5) 4. JJ Hughes 76 (3) / 5. Kent Christian 1c (1) 6. Cole Ketcham 41K (7) 7. Kurt Gross 1x (8) 8. Tony DiMattia 50 (9) 9. Andretti 18 (6)

Hughes contact with Andretti ended the heat for the latter. C. Short led early over Windom and Hughes. Grant grabbed the final transfer from Christian on lap two, and third from Hughes on lap three.

Heat four (started): 1. Logan Jarrett 29 (1) 2. Brady Bacon 69 (2) 3. Farney 15F (5) 4. Darland 71P (6) / 5. Josh Hodges 4 (8) 6. Scotty Weir 11 (3) 7. CJ Leary 30 (7) 8. Kyle Wissmiller 3x (4)

Jarrett led early over a good battle between Bacon and Farney. Darland snatched fourth from Weir on lap three. Hodges sported number 4, earning owner points for Tracy Hines, who broke ribs at Lawrenceburg and sat out.

B main (started): 1. Meseraull (17) 2. Cottle (9) 3. Andretti (2) 4. M. Wissmiller (1) 5. B. Short (5) 6. Weir (6) / 7. Swanson (10) 8. Hodges (16) 9. Leary (12) 10. Shuman (13) 11. Ketcham (11) 12. Rose (4) 13. Christian (8) 14. Babcock (14) 15. K. Wissmiller (3) 16. DiMattia (19) 17. Bell (18) 18. Dakus (7) 19. Gross (15) DNS – Nathan Moore 48, Shelby VanGilder 22N

This 12-lapper was a good one! M. Wissmiller led the first lap over Andretti, Rose, B. Short and Weir. Gross spun with a lap in the books. On the restart, Weir jumped up to third. DiMattia spun and collected Bell, who tipped over with five laps in. M. Wissmiller led Andretti, Weir, B. Short, Cottle and Meseraull, up from 17th to the green. B. Short moved into third on the restart, and Cottle followed him into fourth. On lap seven, Cottle took third before Rose spun to bring a caution. M. Wissmiller again led the pack back to green ahead of Andretti, Cottle, B. Short, Meseraull and Weir. Cottle shot on the low side of turn three to go from third to first on the restart, while Meseraull took third. On lap nine, Meseraull grabbed second from Andretti. A lap later, B. Short got by M. Wissmiller. Meseraull went for it on the last lap and passed Cottle for the win after starting 17th.

A main (started): 1. Farney (1) 2. Ballou (9) 3. Darland (5) 4. Boespflug (4) 5. Stockon (16) 6. Stanbrough (10) 7. Bacon (18) 8. Grant (2) 9. Coons (6) 10. Cottle (21) 11. Schuerenberg (19) 12. Thomas Jr. (3) 13. Andretti (8) 14. Wiindom (11) 15. Weir (14) 16. Hughes (13) 17. Simon (15) 18. Jarrett (20) 19. Meseraull (22) 20. C. Short (17) 21. B. Short (12) 22. M. Wissmiller (7)

Farney led Grant, Boespflug and Ballou early in the 30-lapper. Ballou was third by lap two. On lap three, M. Wissmiller came to a stop in turn two. Ballou moved to second on the restart, but it was negated when C. Short stopped with a flat right rear. Ballou was undeterred and shot by Boespflug for second when the green fell again. B. Short came to a stop five laps in and retired. Farney led Ballou, Boespflug, Coons and Thomas Jr. back to green. By lap 17, Darland moved into fifth and Stockon was up to sixth from 16th. A lap later, Meseraull brought out the red flag. He was uninjured. Farney led Ballou, Boespflug, Grant and Darland back to green. Farney pulled away from Ballou in winning his first career USAC feature event. Stockon was the hard-charger, moving up 11 spots. Bacon and Cottle, who will return to the Hazen 57 at Putnamville, also passed 11 cars each.

Thanks for this! When starting position and finish and a brief summary are given. Its a far better overview of the night. Also what happened to a team that they didn't finish.

Thanks

Race summary was good bit none the less nothing that went on in this race would have changed or did change the outcome of the winner tonight... Farney was flat hooked up and he drove like a veteran!!! Did anyone see how he was going in and out of lapped cars before the red??? I would have bet you Ballou was Going to swallow him up in lapped traffic but Farney actually drove away from him. .. then after the red he then began to be even faster... congratulations Farney and dam impressive drive !!!

Shane Cottle had a very impressive run. Jumping last minute into an unfamiliar car, qualifying and the heat race seemed to be a learning process. Once the B main started and continuing through the A main he looked like he had been driving the car for a while.

I guess Farney did no damage to the car when he kissed the wall a few times. Impressive!

I almost looked as if Ballou gave up the last few laps knowing that he had no chance at the win. JMO
