Cory Clay best at B'town...
Young gun, Cory Clay, blasted the field at Brownstown Speedway Saturday night June 2nd for his first MMSA career victory. The Watson Racing Performance Engines, Clay Design Build, Rod End Supply, Clay Excavating and DMD Engineering ride was spot on Saturday night.
A seventeen car field was on tap to try to tame the legendary Brownstown Speedway 1/4 mile dirt. Heat race action from Saturday had some great action to start the evening. Rolling out on P1 in heat one was Blake Vermillion, he would set sail on the field, thinking just maybe he shook that monkey off his back, till lap 6 when the monkey turned gorilla. Vermillion approaching lap traffic going off into turn 3 checked up to go around the outside of a back marker and second place Cody Trammell caught the tail of the Vermillion car sending Vermillion for a ride he would not forget.
It all seemed to happen in slow motion as I stood watching the accident. I see first and second come barreling down on the slower car, I see Vermillion check up, then I see Trammell coming on and at the last second unsuccessfully getting slowed down enough and clipping the Vermillion car. Seeing Vermillion car go air born off the turn 3 cushion and taking a series of flips before resting on its side. Vermillion would climb from the car uninjured. Trammell would go on and win heat race one with Jesse Vermillion and Keith Arvin rounding out the top 3. Vermillion's crew would thrash to get his ride repaired by feature time to start 17th on the field.
Heat 2 would see two heavy hitters setting on row one, Justin Lewis and Cory Clay. This race would come down to the last lap with Lewis leading the pace to the checkers followed by Clay and Austin Powell.
The feature event would roll out shortly after the sun had set, MMSA inversion set Powell and Arvin row one, Clay and Lewis row two. and Jesse Vermillion and most passing points on the evening went to 6th place starter, Trammell.
The green would fly Austin Powell would lead in the early going, caution one would fly for the Blake Vermillion car after clipping the turn one tire. On restart Powell, Clay, Trammell, and Jesse Vermillion set sail into one, Vermillion going for the pass for 3rd would run out of room on the bottom of the track bringing out caution number 2. Powell would set the pace for the next 4 laps before Cory Clay would put the pressure on him. Lap after lap Cory was relentless looking inside and outside of Powell. Lap 14 Clay would successfully pass Powell in turn one to take control of the feature. This would be Cory's first MMSA feature event win. Victory lane was a pure joy, the screaming voice of Clay as he climbed atop his car to wave the checkered flag. All smiles from his dad and crew!
Clay would pass tech and officially joined the long list of MMSA event winners. Following Clay to the line was Trammell. Powell, Lewis, Miller, J. Vermillion, would battle back to 6th, Arvin 7th, Chambers 8th, Smith and Langley would fill the top 10.
Notes of interest,
One driver has finished top 5 in every event this year, hats off to Cody Trammell, with a 2nd, 3rd, 1st, 1st, 1st and 2nd. Also Cindy Chambers has a top 10 streak going, 8th, 6th, 5th,7th, 9th, and 8th, nice job to both on their consecutive runs.
MMSA takes a weekend off and will return to battle at Lincoln Park Speedway on June 16th.
