USAC Champion Windom Prepares For Wild Week In May

Before taking to the track for the USAC Silver Crown season opener this weekend at ISM Raceway near Phoenix, Arizona, Chris Windom is already looking forward to and mentally preparing for the challenge that awaits him during the final week of the month of May. That monumental challenge has been dubbed “Windom’s Wild Week”.

The successful and versatile two-time USAC champion from Canton, Illinois, who was recently added to the Belardi Auto Racing roster in partnership with Jonathan Byrd’s Racing and Baldwin Brothers Racing to contest the Freedom 100 Indy Lights race on Indianapolis 500 Carb Day, has lined up a completely unprecedented week of motorsports madness.

Over the course of seven jam-packed days, with the Freedom 100 serving as the marquee event of the week’s activities, Windom will attempt to compete in 5 different racing disciplines at 6 different historic Indiana racetracks.

Windom will find himself doing the nearly impossible, some might even say crazy, as he bounces back and forth between pavement and dirt, piloting an Indy Lights car, sprint cars on dirt and pavement, and Silver Crown cars on dirt and pavement.

“Windom’s Wild Week” will kick off at the hallowed grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and traverse the Hoosier state to include the high banked lightning quick quarter mile Anderson Speedway, the scary fast half mile Terre Haute Action Track, the big dirt mile at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and the always challenging Lucas Oil Raceway Park before closing out the unparalleled week at “Indiana’s baddest bullring”, Kokomo Speedway.

The history-making schedule will commence on Monday of Memorial Day week with Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires testing behind the wheel of the Belardi/Byrd/Baldwin #33 in preparation for the Freedom 100. Tuesday will be a day of relaxation before things get intense, with the doubleheader of Little 500 practice at Anderson Speedway and the Tony Hulman Classic featuring the USAC Amsoil Sprint cars at the Action Track in Terre Haute, the scene of five USAC triumphs in his career. Thursday will be quite the full slate, as his tripleheader will include Freedom 100 practice and qualifying at IMS, Little 500 qualifying at Anderson Speedway, and the prestigious Hoosier Hundred USAC Silver Crown race at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

The holiday weekend commences on Friday with another round of double duty, as Windom makes his Road To Indy debut in the Freedom 100 before heading down the road for the USAC Silver Crown race at Lucas Oil Raceway Park, while Saturday will see Windom looking to pick up his 3rd career victory in the 70th running of the Payless Little 500 presented by UAW-GM. The whirlwind week wraps up north of Indianapolis on Sunday night with sprint car action at Kokomo Speedway, where Windom has posted more than a dozen main event victories.

The demanding and never before attempted racing feat will involve the combined efforts of four different racing teams, including the aforementioned Belardi Auto Racing with Byrd & Baldwin for Windom’s first run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Windom will be in the familiar orange Baldwin #5 for the dirt sprint car races at Terre Haute and Kokomo. The Silver Crown races at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Lucas Oil Raceway Park will be handled by Nolen Racing as Windom pilots the yellow #17 in pursuit of his 2nd series championship. Rounding out the line-up, Goacher Racing will provide a seat in their #5G for the Little 500, as the combo looks to score their 2nd event win together.

Before “Windom’s Wild Week” gets underway, Chris Windom is scheduled to compete in 3 USAC Silver Crown and a dozen sprint car races including 8 USAC national shows, while also working in some Indy Lights and Little 500 testing. Stay up to date on all things Chris Windom via Twitter @WindomChris.

Go get them Chris! This "old school" racing, the way it was and hopefully the way it will become again! GOOD LUCK!
