Meseraull Masters Montpelier Monster BOSS Field

The Rick's Trucks & Equipment BOSS sprint car tour made a triumphant return to the Montpelier Motor Speedway in Montpelier, Indiana Saturday night. Last season's annual event fell victim to mother nature. The much anticipated return found forty-six sprint cars signing in for battle on the very well prepared quarter mile dirt oval.

The cars were divided into five heat races of 8 laps with the top 4 transferring to the 25 lap main event. Thomas Meseraull, Isaac Chapple, Dustin Smith, Shane Cottle and J.J. Hughes claimed heat race wins. Twin B-Main wins were picked up by Ty Tilton and Michael Fischesser. The top 2 drivers from each heat race redrew for starting positions and rookie driver Gage Etgen drew the pole with Meseraull starting from the second position.

At the drop of the green flag, Etgen rocketed to a quick early lead and showed the way for the first 3 circuits on the dust free, historic bullring. However, action would slow for the first of 3 interruptions when Dustin Ingle looped his mount.

On the restart, second running Thomas Meseraull made his move on the race leader in turns 1 and 2 and became the race's official leader on lap 4. Another early yellow would fly for a spin on the seventh circuit for Todd Keen. Back under green, Meseraull continued to show the way but 7th starting Shane Cottle was on the prowl in the Hazen 57 getting to the runner-up spot and starting to apply pressure on the leader. Ninth starting Justin Grant in the McGhee 17 was also on the move chasing down the lead pair.

The night's only red flag came on lap 18 when J.J. Hughes spun after contact with another car. Hard running Steve Irwin from Fenton, Michigan had nowhere to go, clipped the disabled Hughes 76, launching the Irwin Flying Zero into a vicious series of barrell rolls in turn 4. Thankfully he emerged unhurt.

The final 7 circuits featured some incredible racing back through the pack as Matt Westfall advanced 10 spots, Drew Rader advanced 11 positions and Cooper Clouse earned the "Hard Charger" award advancing 12 spots with a 20th to 8th place run.

However, up front, Meseraull would turn back all challengers in the former SST Motorsports number 41 wrenched by Dave Stensland. Cottle, the 2015 event winner, had to settle for second with Grant third. Isaac Chapple and Tyler Hewitt completed the top 5. Rounding out the top 10 were Westfall, Lee Underwood, Clouse, Dustin Smith and Gage Etgen.

The BOSS series wishes to extend a big thank you to the forty-six teams who made the trip to Montpelier making it the largest car count of the season thus far for the tour. Also, a sincere thank you to the many fans who braved the chilly night time temperatures. Finally, to the staff at Montpelier Motor Speedway, a thank you for the best racing surface the tour has had all season.

The final event of the 2017 BOSS championship chase will take place Saturday, September 30th at Fremont Speedway in Fremont, Ohio. This will be the always exciting 33 lap - $5,000 to win "Mike Hensel Memorial". This event annually draws nearly 50 entries and promoter Rich Farmer always gives BOSS a well prepared race track. We hope to see you all there to bring the curtain down for the season.
