Hewitt Masters Montpelier BOSS Finale

A chilly fall afternoon greeted race fans and a stellar field of 42 traditional wingless sprint cars. Dallas Hewitt, aboard the Todd Keen owned number 18, led all 25 laps of the main event. However, the BOSS season finale was much more exciting than the box score would indicate.

Five preliminary heat races were won by Bill Rose, Scotty Weir, J.J. Hughes, Lee Underwood and Isaac Chapple. Rose, Weir and Chapple brought some heat to the chilly fans by winning their heat races from the 4th row! A pair of twin 10 lap B-Mains were claimed by Tyler Hewitt and Dustin Ingle. Michael Fischesser also warmed the crowd with his charge from 8th in B-Main #2 to steal the 2nd and final transfer spot. The field was then set for a 24 car - 25 lap main event to close the lid on the 2018 championship campaign.

Kory Crabtree would draw the pole position and lead the field to the green flag with Hewitt alongside. Hewitt wasted no time in establishing himself as the man to beat as he opened a sizable margin. Crabtree, in the Gagliardi 77 and third place starter Scotty Weir, in the Miller 9, battled for the runner-up spot, but it was a pair of 9th row starters who caught the audience's attention. Clinton Boyles in the Hazen 57 and Thomas Meseraull in the Whitney 00 started from 17th and 18th respectively and both were on the move early.

Twenty-four of the best ran the first 15 laps caution free on the quarter mile oval, until a spin by Korbyn Hayslett in turn 2. Boyles had passed 13 cars, advancing from 17th to 4th by lap 15. On the restart, J.J. Hughes' great run was abrupted when he spun in turn 1 and 2, with slight contact, but the car stood on it's tail tank, and performed a pirouette for the Montpelier faithful.

Once the race was back under green, Hewitt again established himself as the clear front runner. The battle around the number 5 spot found four non wing stalwarts in an epic battle. Meseraull, Isaac Chapple, Clinton Boyles and Cole Ketcham ran on (and sometimes over) the edge and at times, were so close, they could have driven each others cars!

Entering turn 3, Crabtree made contact with Weir, starting a chain reaction of bumper banging. Crabtree would have a cut right rear tire and head to the work area. Sneaking past the carnage was Clinton Boyles who now found himself in the runner-up spot. With one final 5 lap shootout remaining, it appeared Boyles would have a shot at Hewitt, but the Keen 18 was on point and Hewitt executed the game plan to perfection for a convincing win. Boyles held on for 2nd with 2018 champion Bill Rose running a steady race, mirroring his championship performance, and taking 3rd place. Meseraull and Ketcham rounded out the top 5. Weir faded to 6th as Chapple, Ty Tilton, Lee Underwood and Luke Hall completed the top 10.

Watch for BOSS banquet details to be released in the next week. The 2019 season is already taking shape and we hope to see everyone at the Fremont Swap Meet and Flea Market on October 27th or at the PRI Show in Indy in December.

Fierce racing behind Dallas Hewitt. Second back to sixth was a cluster that resembled a demo derby. Boyles seems to find the small openings and takes them without hesitation. Scotty Weir was coming until the beating and banging took place. A very entertaining and hold your breath style feature by BOSS. Thank you Aaron, Elizabeth, Harold, and crew for a superb show! See you in 2019.
