The dirt track racing season in windind down in Ohio. There is only 1 more week of racing at Waynesfield Raceway Park left after finishing this weeks events. Saturday nights racing included the Tuff Trucks, Compacts, UMP Late Models, and the final points night for the UMP Modifieds.
The high powered UMP Super Late Models were be the 1st cars to line up for their feature event. Scott Orr and Jerry Bowersock would lead the field around to the green flag. Bowersock would quickly take command of the race. He was able to lead the 1st few laps until 3rd place starter Rusty Schlenk began to challenge Bowersock. They fought it out for 3 laps until Schlenk finally made his way into 1st. Schlenk would pull out into the lead and do a wonderful job of working his way past lapper traffic. Schlenk was able to go on to win the race with Jon Henry finishing in 2nd and Brian Ruhlman finishing 3rd. Steve Kester, Henry, and Ruhlman were the late model heat race winners with Ryan Missler winning the B-main.
The Waynesfield Tuff Trucks were the next group to take to the high backs. Gabe Twining and Derrick Noffsinger filled the front row to start the race. Twining would grab the lead from the beginning. His brother, Matt Twining would soon begin to put on some pressure for the point. As the two brothers fought side by side for the lead, the 3rd row starters of Tim Dick and Chris Hicks joined the battle. Dick would find the needed moisture on the bottom of the track and eventually take over the lead. Hicks would also be able to pass the brothers but could never catch Tim Dick. Dick would finish the race in 1st, Hicks was 2nd, and Matt Twining was 3rd. The truck heats were won by Jerry Sawmiller, Tim Dick, and Chris Hicks.
The track points championship was on the line as the UMP Modifieds took to the track to finish their season with big money on the line. Jon Henry and Brian Post would start the race at the front. Henry would grab the lead with Post right on his bumper. It only took Post a couple laps to work past Henry. Henry tried to fight his way back under Post but ended up spinning to a stop in the infield. Post would continue to lead the field. 8th place starter Jeff Babcock had worked his way into the runner-up position and caught Post with the white flag showing. With Post running the low side, Babcock went high. Post was able to hold off Babcock by 2 carlengths at the finish line with Gary Richard finishing 3rd. Post pocketed the $1000 for winning the race while Jeff Babcock earned enough points to be crowned "Track Champion." Zach Schroeder, Bill Keeler, Henry, and Post won the modified heat races with Kelly Bowlby and Mike Roediger winning the twin B-mains.
The front wheel drive Compacts were the final feature race of the night. Harvey Yoder and JJ Butler led the Compacts to the green. All eyes were on 7th place starter Jeff Kimes and he would not disappoint. Kimes cut through the field like butter and went of to score his 6th Compact feature win this season at Waynesfield. Justin Durflinger finished in 2nd and David Yoder rounded out the top 3. Jeff Kimes and David Yoder won the Compact heat races.
Waynesfield Raceway Park will finish the season on Sunday September 27th. Non-wing sprints, 600cc mini-sprints, tuff trucks, and compacts will compete for their points championships. Go to www.waynesfieldmotorsportspark.com for more info.
