Story by SkinnyKennysPhotos
SAturday night August 8th Waynesfield, Ohio Raceway Park hosted a special night of racing to help Kids with Cancer. Fans and racers received free hot dogs from the track in exchange for the many toys that were donated to Nationwide Childrens Hospital. Weekly Tuff Truck racer Tim Dick and his family helped put this special event together in honor of his daughter Ashley who continues to fight her battle with cancer. Tim and some of his fellow race drivers will be taking these donations to the Columbus, Ohio hospital this week. These drivers will be entering the hospital while wearing their race uniforms and take a lap thru the hospital to pass out all the toys that were collected for the sick children. We want to say a special "Thank You" to everyone that made a donation.
The Waynesfield Tuff Trucks were the 1st class to compete this week. Bill Keeler and "Fat" Matt Twining would pace the 20 truck field to the green. Twining has been the dominant truck this season with many feature wins. Keeler kept his truck planted on the inside groove of the track while Twining picked the higher line. These two trucks went at it door to door during the 1st half of the race running nearly exackly the same speed. Midway throughout the race, Twining was able to finally establish himself as the leader. Twining would go on to win another Tuff Truck race finishing ahead of Keeler and 3rd place finisher Dan Crowder. Jerry Sawmiller, Ryan Dunlap, and Matt Twining won the truck heat races earlier in the evening.
A good field of 27 non-wing sprint cars signed into Waynesfield Raceway Park. Many of these cars were here to take advantage and get some practice laps in to prepare for next weeks $3000 to win Jack Hewitt Classic non-wing sprint race. Lewie Christian and Kyle Simon filled the front row of cars to start the sprint car A-main feature. Simon shot into the lead at the start of the race and would quickly show the rest that he had the car to beat. Luke Hall came up from his 4th place starting spot and got into position to apply some pressure on Simon. Hall repeatedly stuck his nose underneath Simon while challenging for the lead. Simon held his line and worked his way thru lapped traffic like a pro. Simon led every lap of the sprint car feature and held off Hall for the win. Hall was 2nd, while 10th place started Hud Cone finished in 3rd. Sprint heat race wins were recorded by Dustin Smith, Mike Burkin, Jeff Williams, and Kyle Conaway. Cub Burden won the sprint car b-main.
22 UMP Modifieds would be next to try the Waynesfield high banks. Last weeks winner Brian Post would become the race leader at the completion on lap number one. Post would go on to lead until a caution flag slowed the field with just 2 racing laps left in the feature. When the green flag waved to restart the race, Jeff Babcock would go right to the high side of the track and was able to pull along side of Post. Post would stay on the tracks inside groove as Babcock made the pass for the lead. As the leaders were coming towards the checkered flags, Post tried one last shot on the bottom of the track to get past Babcock. Post seemed to lose a little momentum as Babcock pulled away and earned the race win. Zach Schroeder was able to follow Babcock around Post in the last corner and drop Post to a 3rd place finish. UMP Modified heat winners were Brent Hole, Casey Luedeke, and Eddie Shaner.
The front wheel drive Compact racing class is pretty new to Waynesfield Raceway Park this season. Tonight would be just the 3rd time this class has raced on the quarter mile bullring this year. Jeff Kimes has won the 1st two races and tonight would become a 3 peat for Kimes. He started 4th and wasted little time taking the front position. He went on to easily score his 3rd win in a row followed by 2nd place David Yoder and 3rd place Justin Durflinger. Kimes and Jordan Flynn won the compact heats. Jeff Kimes will have to start the next Compact race at Waynesfield on the tail since he has won 3 races in a row.
The nights racing events would finish up with a special Powder Puff ladies race using some of the Tuff Trucks. Bridget Brunk won the action filled race with Michelle Williams 2nd, and Tana Crossley 3rd.
Saturday August 15th 2009 Waynesfield Motorsports Park will be hosting the 1st Annual Jack Hewitt Classic race for non-wing sprint cars. Many cars are expected to attend this $3000 to win race honoring one of America's Greatest Sprint Car Drivers!! 600cc Mini-sprints, Tuff Trucks, and Compacts will also be in action.
